I had ich. I set up a hospital 10 gallon tank. I lowered the salt over 36 hours to 1.016. My damsel, 3 clowns, and my cleaner wrasse ALL DIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHY???? any ideas?
im sorry to hear about your fish, although i'm not surprised because they were swimming in freshwater... during hypo your only supposed to drop salinity to 1.009
I am not sure what mkzimms is talking about here if you lowered it to 1.016. Did you monitor the PH during this drop? It has a tendency to drop as the SG is lowered. How many fish did you have in the ten and what kind were they? Did you monitor the water readings?
Domino damsel, 3 clowns, and cleaner wrasse.
I monitored the PH and Salt.
They were acting like they were gasping for air so I even added a tiny bit of salt back and they seemed fine after that. I checked on them an hour later and they were all dead.

no problem, just dont want people to think im completely retarted...
anyway, how long had the QT been setup for? thats a lot of fish to quickly put in a tank with very little life support. do you have any water test results you could give us?

My apologies. I was unaware of that.

Did you check for stray voltage? The drop to 1.016 over 36 hours would not have killed these fish by any means, especially if you were on top of checking the PH. Was the ten cycled? Did you check for ammonia spikes? That was a lot of fish in there.

I was doing a 1/4 water change every 2 days or so. They had been in there for 2 weeks because I was trying to use RidIch which did not work so I tried lowering the salinity.
The only thing on the tank is a filter and light. I also have a blenny in there that survived. The butterfly is still in my display.

I am sorry that your fish died. Did you check the water quality? Was the QT cycled?
i think the bacteria doesn't really live in the water, you would still need the bacteria to colonize whatever medium you would be running in the filter. did you add the fish right away?

The water in my 10 gallon initially came from my display. After the 1/4 water change I would add fresh water back with salt mixed in a bucket.
Alright, but water from the display does not cycle the tank. I hate to speculate, but I am guessing that the water quality may not have been so good with all of those fish in that sized tank. Did you happen to get ammonia and nitrite readings?
This has been a horrible week in the fish business for me. I lose 5 fish, my anemone kills itself (it attached to my powerhead and got cut then just disappeared in my tank), I spend 160 dollars on a new wetdry filter and overflowed my display hooking it up. UGGGHHH!!!

I am so sorry. That does sound like a rough run. The only light in this is that you have learned. We have all made terrible mistakes in this hobby. Set up a qt that will be good for your fish. Ten is awfully small. Some use a ten for new fish, but it is not a good size when something like this happens. Please be certain that the tank is cycled.

Would an UV Sterilizer do anything to help? I posted a thread that no one is replying to about it.
UV's are quite controversial. They will kill any parasite that flows through it. The problem is that ich spends VERY little time in the water column. Fish sleep in certain spots in the tank. The ich falls off and is likely to reproduce and become free swimming right where a nice host is. They are a little added protection, but not a cure by any means. In a reef tank they are not great at all. They will kill any microfauna or other desirable micro inverts that flow through it.
Ok I am going to sound really stupid but I am very new to salt water. What exactly is considered a reef tank?
Right now I have a 55 gallon tank with a sump wetdry filter, powerhead, skimmer, about 100 lbs of live rock, 10 shrimp, snails, hermits, 1 fire gobby, 1 clown, and 1 copperband butterfly... oh and a orange linka star and purple urchin.

A reef tank contains corals, anemones, and such. That is not a dumb question at all. There is more microscopic life, normally, in a reef tank than in a FOWLR.
I posted on your UV thread I would like to ask how much LR do you have in the tank?
and how long have you had the orange linkia?
another question what did yo have in the tank during hypo to move the water? how much flow in the tank?
