I just decided to hunt down this post and add an update!
I tested my nitrates yesterday and they are between 5-10 (too hard to distinguish exactly which one)... WHOOOO! I am soooooo soooo happy.
I think it was a combination of less feeding, more water changes, cheato, cleaning out the sump and pumps, adding flow, getting my skimmer working well, changing the filter sponges on my phosban reactor, changing the carbon in the phosban more frequently, etc, etc....
So, if anyone out there is having some nitrate issues like I was, hopefully you will see this post and know that they can be lowered, it just takes some work and hunting for the issues....I hope this thread will hope others out in the future!
Thanks to all those who added suggestions and helped me get this figured out! I am still going to try to get my trates down to zero, but I think 5-10 is a big improvement from 50! I am soo excited, I think I will get some new inverts this weekend!
Oh~ and I do plan on switching to a new salt mix, once I use up what I have left of the instant ocean. Maybe I will try reef crystals.....
