After much shopping and talking over the past few months. I am FINALLY getting my 100 gallon tank.

Dimensions are 60" long by 18" deep by 20" tall - what is a good MH light wattage for this tank?
Also - the stand measures 5'2" long by 18.5" deep by 34" tall what is a good sump/refug size for this tank?
Any and all suggestions accepted.

congratz ... is it a stand or a cabinet stand? If it is a cabinet, the sump/fuge size depends on the door size... unless you have access to the back of the cabinet.

Well I haven't actually seen it. I am going to get it tomorrow. Attached is a picture of the set up. It does have doors on it. If you need more information I will have to post that tomorrow afternoon after I get home with it.

Hey Tim
How are you?
I can use all the help I can get. I am clueless at this large tank. Everything on my 29 is HOT. So I need to figure out what kind of filter, lights, skimmer, yada yada yada. :notsure:
So any suggestions would be GREAT!!

my sump/fuge are placed next to the tank because they will not fit inside the stand.. makes for very easy cleaning!

I'm good! Still working on my 120, it will get done some day.
Well, couple Q's. Is it a reef ready or HOB overflow (looks like RR)? What are you going to keep, are going for, LPS/softies, clams, SPS? Is that the actual tank? Do you want to go with a sump/fuge set up?
20" tall I think you'll be good with a couple of 175 mh + PC actincs, skimmer ASM G2 can beat it for the price. I just set one up for somebody else and I was very impressed.

Ok guys I have a 29 gallon reef that has been up and running since October. Everything is great with it. I should have of course taken all advice an gone bigger to start with
So I am starting fresh with a 100 gallon tank. I just picked it up today from a man in Dallas.
I was thinking of a 30/40 gallon sump/refugium set up - need to find one cheap.
I was wondering what kind of skimmer should I get? I am on a budget so please remember that. What is the turn over amount for 100 gallon.
On my 29 I have a closed loop Squid wavemaker using a Mag5 (500 gph). I have CPR Bak Pak skimmer running with a MJ 1200 (295 gph). I have a Penguin 350 (350 gph) biowheel on it.
With all that I have 1145 gph going around - If I did that right
So what is suggested for a 100 gallon? My questions I guess are what size equipment should I get? I know nothing about larger tanks. Like I said all my stuff is hang on and has worked great.
I have a seaclone 150 and this cpr that I could put on the sump of the new tank if anyone thinks that will work.
As far as filters go....should I get one or not?? I do run carbon on my 29 and I also use PhosX for phosphates.
All comments and suggestions needed and welcome.

Are you gonig to keep the 29 or move everthing thing to the 100? Sorry to say but I don't think the equipment is going to transfer. Did you get anything with the 100 or just the tank?
With clams I would move up to MH lights (2 -175 maybe 250?).
It looks in the pic that there isn't a center brace on the stand so it should be plenty of room under there.
You'll probably want around 20x flow. What size drain/OF does it have and return line?
The reason I ask about the 29, maybe you can use it for thr sump/fuge set-up. That would may work for the fuge (a little small). then you will have to see how much room is under there. What are the dimensions under the stand?
29 for the fuge and then maybe a 20 for the skimmer/return........

Well I will get the dimensions for ya tomorrow on the inside of the stand. No there are no center braces. The guy used a 55 for a sump/refug. We are thinking we may build one. As far as plumbing...duh I have no idea what you just asked. LOL
It is has a corner black overflow and it it there are two holes with two bulk heads. The gave me the PVC plumbing that he used for it. The return has like a wavemaker nozel type thing on it. (Black tubes that make a V shape and the ends can be moved into different directions to make the flow go different ways). Hope that makes since.
He did give me a large skimmer that is from Reeflife (I think) or something like that. But he said it is old and it worked for him, but that it isn't worth anything money wise so I assume it isn't much of a skimmer. However I can use it I guess til I figure out what to do about that.
Yes I do plan on moving everything from my 29 into the larger tank.
How do I set up my squid wavemaker with this drilled tank? Do I do something special? Do I need to drill it again in another spot?

Sounds like you are getting a nice tank!

If you want to do halides, I'd think about a fixture with 3 bulbs... a 5 foot tank needs more than 2 bulbs for good coverage IMO.
Is your closed loop a hang on the back type number? If so you can probably still use it on the new tank. You probably won't want to drill it.

Hey Wax!! Good to hear from you.
My closed loop is hooked up to be hang on back. Is there a way I could use it in conjunction with the sump and be able to bring the plumbing out??? I have NO idea. The pump I am using now is a Mag 5 can those be put in a sump?
What is a good size pump to use to bring the water back up into the tank?

Not really.

Yes, but you'd be better off keeping it for your closed loop.

It depends on how big the bulkhead for the overflow is... if it is an inch like mine you could go with something like an Eheim 1262 which does about 900 gallons per hour.

Hey Wax!
I would bet that its a 1" drain and a 3/4" return. Which you'll have to size a pump to that. A 55 would work for sump/fuge but it would sure be nice to use the 29. I'm with wax on the CL use it now and maybe get a bigger pump down the road. Yea, why not try that skimmer and see what it can do......
Give me the stand dims and I'll see if I can give some ideas.....

You're making a very blue tank. Remember, the bluer, the less PAR.
You have 1 center bar or 2? Are your partition evently divided by the center bar(s)?

I have no idea what you are talking about
I am just learning about these. So I have no idea.
Here is a picture of a 3x175 MH that I also looking at. Would this be better?

The only difference with the picture now is that the picture shows a previous verion of 4x65W compact fluorescent bulb and the new verison comes with 2x130W compact fluorescent bulb
Would this be ok??
