You have some real talent. I’m serious when I say this so don’t laugh. After seeing this so far and knowing your on the east cost I would have gladly paid you for our wedding cake, at least I know some of the money would be spent on swf and coral

ok... we're getting closer.... I'm finally finished with all the decorations, 2morrow begins the baking!!!
I'm getting anxious too... the whole "will they like it" deal I go through before every single delivery. anxiety dreams about delivering piles of crumbs, or getting into car accidents on the way to the reception hall..... its all very nere wracking.
i did snap some pix of some of the things I made, but again, none of it is on the cake (b/c it hasn't been baked yet!), and ALL of it is busy drying on its various un-glamorous apparatuses.
the 1st two pix are going to be the topper for the cake; they are handmade edible snowflakes on wires, which are topped off with crystals. the whole thing is resting in a paper towel roll in a glass, so the wires keep their shape.
the 2nd two pix are the branch I sculpted - also edible - that is going to "grow" up the front of the cake at an angle. It's resting on all sorts of things to ensure it keeps its shape as it dries. The pointy things around it are pine needles that I'll be attaching to the branch with icing when I assemble the cake on-site. They are far too delicate to attach beforehand.
The last picture is an example of one of four large handmade edible snowflakes that will be surrounding the base of the wired topper. (rather fuzzy photo...sorry)
i'm SUPER excited to see this coming together.... but like I said.... I'm also getting super nervous.... wish me luck!!!

Can you eat those snow flakes?

LoL, thanx Sharky

and 2 answer your original question, yes this is what I do professionally. I used 2b a vet-tech, but I left the practice to start my own cake design firm last year. It's CRAZY fun!

I start baking tonight too... can't WAIT 'till the whole house smells like cake.... mmmmmmmm

yep! sure can! they are made of gumpaste - which is fondant w/tylose powder added. Fondant is an edible dough made of sugar, corn syrup and gelatin, and the tylose powder is an edible chemical added to it to make it easier to manipulate and also make it dry super-hard. Regular fondant is great for covering cakes and stuff, but figurines are better made of gumpaste b/c fondant tends to crack and melt and break, but gumpaste stays hard once its dry.

what is the wrapping called to make a cake look so uniformed? If im even saying/calling it right. It makes it look smooth and just made the cake look so nice.
My wife is very involved in this thread, watching the cake be created.
Not trying to blow you up either but is make a cake that hard? Im not saying i could do it, not by no mean and if my wife was happy then i was happy but do wedding cakes really call for a couple of g notes?
Well deserved price tag, its was tasty and it looked like art, almost like it was fake.

oh wait I just reread the thread, is it the fonduant???? that makes the cake look seamless?
I don't know all I know is any cake I have layered i use the good o'l icing to stick them together and icing around to make it look like one big cake or I should say the leaning tower of cake.
Can’t cook desserts to save my life.
Thank god for betty crocker and good O‘l Sarah lee. And when I let them down, Delicious Orchards to back me up.

yes, the wrapping that makes it look smooth and fabulous is fondant.
i'll tell you a little secret though.....
it's not that fun to eat.
i would never make a cake without it.... and my cakes are always filled with awesome frostings anyhow, but no one ever really eats the fondant. it's there for the decoration and entertainment value and that's about it. ...but you really can't make them look as fabulous as they get without it.

hmmm, we wondered about that. Is that why the cake is always like the center cut? Or do they cut that stuff away?
Dumb me i thought it was a candy shell or something.

the fondant is soft enough to cut through, and I have met 1 or 2 pple who like to eat it, but it's literally like eating playdough made of sugar. what happens at weddings for instance, is the bride & groom will make the 1st cut 4their photo-op, and then the caterer will whisk the whole thing away and disassemble it in the kitchen. It's cut just just like any other cake, so you WILL end up with a layer of fondant on the outside of your slice, but most people peel it off and eat just the cake and filling - leaving the fondant on their plates.
