Ok so i have been having major cyano problems for about 3-4 months now and can still not figure out how to stop it. i thought that it was my phosphates so i bought some phosguard and the phosphate is at 0 but there is still a ton of cyano. so now i am thinking that it is my water. but idk how it could be because it is from a machine that says it is carbon filtered, RO filtered, and UV filtered. i really just dont know what to do now. please help

OMG join the club..LOl...The best thing is to make sure you have enough flow...make sure your lighting is not on too much...you are not feed ing too much...DO MUCHO w/c's...
AND PRAY..LOL
I have been battling cyano in one tank for a couple of months...it WILL NOT go away over night....do larger than normal w/c's...do not let up on it...siphon out what you can before w/c's....and another thing GOOD LUCK...it can be beat

I dont think ro means phosphates and silica are removed. Maybe someone else can answer that for sure. I know I have read time after time that phosphates will read low after algae is present because it is consuming it. Thank God I have not had to fight that battle yet!

There could easily still be phosphates in the RO.
Maybe the filter hasn't been changed in a while or something. Test the RO water you are using.

ok thanks for all of the replies. i am pretty sure that i have enough flow because i have two powerheads going in a 24g aquarium. and i have limited my feedings to every other day. and my light is on 12-14 hours a day. i will try to lower that. i am going to test my water source and see what the the phosphate level looks like. once again, thanks.

I had the same problem about a month ago. My LFS gave me a chemical called Ultra life Red Slime remover. You have to turn off your skimmer if you have one or if you have a hang on filter pull out the carbon filters. The carbon will remove the chemical. you put one scoop for 10 gallons. directions say 1 scoop for 15 gallons but my LFS said to put 1 for 10. Then let circulate 72 hrs without any carbon filters. It will look yellow for those days. After the 72 hrs do a 30% water change. Worked great for me.

I would search out a thread by Spanko on Cyano.
My personal thoughts are that Cyano does not eat coral, but the bacteria can over time fully over grow the coral and the coral will starve to death.
Chemicals do work. I would just like you to remember that Cyano assimilates Nitrate. When the chemical kills the Cyano the nitrates are released back into the DT so water changes are a must.

just siphon off that top layer throw it in the trash and put a powerhead on that area. I had a patch just like that and thats what I did. GOne in no time. Add a few more to the clean up crew wont hurt either

i am not going to use a chemical because i have heard that they can harm or kill coral, which i have a lot of. i have tried putting the powerhead on the sand but it just creates a HUGE sand storm. so i think that i am going to switch water sources for a while to see what happens.

Cyano will not go away overnight....You have to do more frequent w/c's (with good water)...siphon what you can....make sure your flow is good (Ihave re adjusted mine 3x)
BTW how long is your lighting on?
You may want to cut the lighting back some too....and BE Patient

Yea, it all depends on the source.
No walmarts in my area hvae the machines, but a shoprite (supermarket) by my house got one.
I used it for a while and got an algae bloom. I didn't test the water before hand, and it turns out the water had phosphates. I have since went back to good RO, but my algae still won't go away completely.
Make sure you test before you add it.

excuse my ignorance
. but how do you tell what is cyano or coraline?
WEll I by no means am an expert...BUT I do have coraline...and sadly I do have cyano...If you look at the pic I posted you can see how the cyano is waving in the water...it is soft...a light weight mat...can easily be siphoned
coraline is hard....NOW coraline does come in pink, red, and green too but to my knowledge it is never flaky....
