Actually, the Ammolok/Amquel "converts the toxic ammonia to less toxic (but still bad) ammoniUm...which is "less" stressfull on the fish.
It doesn't affect or delay the cycle by "eliminating" or inhibbiting the ammonia conversion because it is the same nitrosomos bacteria converting ammoniUm as ammonia to nitrIte.
It just makes it less stressfull on the fish.
You still have to deal with NitrItes though...which is where a bacterial agent such as Cycle or Prime will add "nitrobactor" bacteria which convert nitrIte to NitrAte.
Effectively "speeding up" or helping along the cycle...
It's mostly the dillution of these bacteria colonies (and their food sources) by water changes that slow/inhibit the cycle.

Tony,
Yes I did, absolutely fabulous. I would love to be able to keep something like that. My problem is I couldn't get rid of the shark when it got to big, so I would have to flood my basement.

well my lfs wouldnt take him back cause they said he would die from all the changing tanks and if he is in a tank with ammonia now and goes right into one without it he will go into shock..sooooo i bought CYCLE and added it to my tank..and i bought like 3 hermit crabs and a few snails..my friend who works in the store gave me like 4 pieces of LR from hi established FOWLR tank..so hopefully my shark will survive..they said in the store that he should..but i know better than listening to everything they say..well i guess i will just have to keep testing and pray that the levels never get too high..any other suggestions?

Beyond what you are doing thats about all you can do. I think they lied a bit by saying they couldn't take him back. Any reputable store would acclimate a fish like that over time. I know I always did taking fish in when i worked at a lfs......

I haven't chimed in yet ... but here's my .02.
IMO, your lfs has you right where they want you. It seems to me that the only thing they are concerned with is more immediate sales. Not a very surprising thing from an lfs.;)
Why would pulling a shark from toxic conditions be a bad thing? Yes, changing conditions are stressful, but there is a time when it's worth it. If you were on fire, would you mind someone putting it out? Me either.:D IMO, they are just covering their butt's cause they know the shark is in trouble. But, if they want you to come back, they should help. The lr, crabs, snails, and cycle will not do squat for the shark IMO.
If they absolutely refuse to help, I would recommend following the advice above. Amquel, small water changes(not too much or it will prolong the cycle), and praying for the best.:)

yeah i know the lfs's are bull but theres nothing i can do..so i will do small water changes and use the amquel..i wish the people at lfs's had to read this message board to get more informed on some things..and i was telling them everything u guys said and they were just like well thats not always true and i dont know about that...so we will see..ill do as much as i can

My personal recommendation-
I only like using amquel/stress zyme, etc. in case of absolute emergency. I like the natural approach much better, and I believe it is better.
If I were you I would make a strong effort to locate a fish store and/or a friend that has an established tank and will sell you some of his gravel/sand.(sand is much better for your shark's belly) If it is a 55 gallon a 1 gallon milk jug with the top chopped off filled up with sand will work just fine, maybe even a couple tupperware containers. Get a store to scoop 4 or 5 cups of their gravel out of an established tank and into the jug. DO NOT LET THEM SELL YOU ARAG-ALIVE/bacteria in a bottle, etc.. I am not downing arag alive, I am just stating that gravel/sand(preferably sand) out of a tank that is running is much better (IMO).
