The dog isn't going to be chained up all day. Hes going to be running around the backyard with out a leash on. The dog is going to be 60% of the time outside and 40% of the time inside. But if its going to be bad weather we will let him inside the house, but first ill need to give him a bath if hes going to be dirty.

Hey, he eats VERY fast and then drinks some water. So, I should feed him 3x a day but a little bit at a time right? How many cups would you suggest a day for him?
Looking at the pics IMO hes going to be fairly large, hes doesnt have enormous feet but he appears to big boned. IMO/E this is an indication of a med lg to possibly lg adult dog. Its a tough call with mixed breeds nothing is definate. I had a lab mix that I was told would be a max 50lb dog and he ended up being almost 65 and in great shape.
When you get a mix breed, pound puppy and or rescue animal IMO a lot of TLC needs to be taken into consideration than just putting food in a bowl and letting them be. The answer to the question you are asking is a bit more involved IMO than just a quantity of food x amount of times a day. The dogs background from birth till you aquired him is a mystery and will only show signs of what life was like for him prior to you taking him home after hes been with you a while. For instance his eating habits, its important not to let your pup eat too fast. However the manner in which he eats is just as important. Many times in litters of abandon pups or in shelters, survival of the fittest plays its role. So you maybe witnessing a dog that feels that he needs to gorge himself with as much as possible for as long as he is allowed or that the food is available. This is unhealthy and where IMO a 2 or 3 minute duration of letting the dog eat as much as he can would be harmful. As young as your dog is, it is instinctivly doing the only thing it knows or had to do to survive. Showing signs of aggression toward you or anyone that gets near him is a red flag and an indication of what life was like for him in his litter. Adversly cowering when someone approaches when hes eating is a sign of low self esteem and confidence another red flag. Even now it would be benificial for you to start trainning the dog earning its trust. Allowing him to eat but observing how fast and being prepared to slow him down if needed. I think that a 1-1/3 cups 3 times a day would be a good place to start. Generally the recomendations on the bag of food as far as quantity is a good place to start. Once you see how your dog eats, how much weight he gains and how fast you can cater his diet accordingly IMO. Also routine vet visits will give a good idea how he is progressing and if any changes in diet should be made. Again this is just MO... and what I have learned with the 4 pound puppies I have owned in my life.

Ok. Thanks for the info!! He isn't aggressive and isn't afraid when hes eating or any time of the day. But he LOVES LOVES LOVES to play! [QEOTE]"I think that a 1-1/3 cups 3 times a day would be a good place to start."
I should feed the dog 3 times a day and each time I feed him, feed him 1-1/3 cups? Or get 1-1/3 cups and divide it by 3 and feed those amounts 3 times? Also, the breeder never gave him any shots. What kind of shots does he need?

1-1/3 cups of food 3x a day. You need to schedule a vet appt asap, your new pup need his first round of vaccinations. Lyme, for one and at least 2 other boosters that I can remember. Also it wouldnt be a bad idea to bring the vet a stool sample to check for parasites and worms. Lastly getting a round of flea and tick medicine and a heartguard medicine that needs to be administered monthly. After the first round of shots you will schedule another appt approx 3 weeks later for the second round which is another lyme and another booster. If your pup has not seen a vet yet he is suseptable to some nasty little bugs that can be very harmful to him if he should contract them. The Parvo virus for one can be deadly in the puppy months. And as I hope you already know you should have already thought about scheduling him for the "snip" visit if you know what I mean.

We have 3 mastiffs (1 Neopalitan - 165 lbs., 1 Bullmastiff - 135 lbs, and 1 English - 250 lbs.). They all live inside with us. We have a fenced in back yard that they get to run around in, but I couldn't imagine having them live outside all the time. It wouldn't be fair to them or the neighbors.

vaccination: DHLPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, leptospirosis, Parainfluenza and Parvo
Lyme..controversial: safe but many questions about how much protection is afforded by the immunizations; Better for Lyme disease contol IMO is to regularly use Frontline or Advantix..monthly 'spot on' insecticides that kill the ticks before they have a chance to spread the disease
Bordatella..nickname 'kennel cough'..great if you feel there will be significant contact with other dogs, especially in close contact environments: kennel/grooming situations are examples
Corona: We do not use in my area. More prevelant in the warmer southern climate; not sure in your area; check with your local vet/spca
rabies: needs it..it is the law
Heartworm preventative..a must in most areas: Heartguard, Interceptor, Revolution, Iverheart are the leading brands...all good

She came from a shelter in NC and is some type of hound dog mix-I think part Rhodesian Ridgeback. My vet just calls her an American Brown Dog!
Yeah, her claws are kinda sharp which helps her get up the trees in the park behind my house. The park is an official off leash dog park so I never have to put a leash on her. She is a fierce squirell hunter and has caught so many that the tree rats are on high alert whenever she goes out.
Check out her web page:
