puffer do u mean .09 not .9 cus that would be raising it. rite now mine is .23 but wen u go it down that low wouldnt the fish die.
also if i get a hippo tang, which i prolly will, i can jus check the fish thoroughly in the bag to see if it has ich then if it doesnt put it in.

hypo is 1.009
you gotta make it low. The ICH cant take the super low salinity and it burst the capsule its in and then it will kill the parasite.

Runner,
Gorgeous. I really like those fish, but thanks to Finding Nemo, I always associate them with the really annoying guy. "Hey, you're a clown fish! You must be funny! Tell us a joke! Heh heh!"

05xrunner, that fish in the picture definitely has ich on its fins and tail. I would highly suggest you treat the fish in your tank for ich and begin to use a quarantine procedure.
Beth has written an extensive amount on quarantining, hyposalinity, and ich prevention at this link:
https://forums.saltwaterfish.com/t/127007/faqs-fish-diseases-treatments-quarantine-health-info
If you need any help, open a thread up in the disease and treatment forum where Beth, Sepulatian, and myself can help you with whatever you need.

I know all about QT, Hyposalinity, freshwater dips and such.
Personally I think they add stress to an already stressed out fish wich is why it has ich. I will make sure it eats well...garlic in food, good water and build up its immune system.

Bobby, please don't get a tang in that small of a tank. Research on this site and it will answer most of the questions you have.
Also, the 'netspeak' is rather hard to read.

Yes, but if you use a quarantine tank, you can get rid of ich permanently and not put it in your display tank. If you use a quarantine tank for every new purchase, ich will no longer ever be a worry.
Garlic, good water quality, etc. will not kill/get rid of ich. It will always potentially be in your tank that way.

Why do you think a qt tank adds stress to a fish? Ich is a parasite and is not "caused" by stress. Stress makes the fish's immune system lower which makes the fish more vulnerable to ich infestation. Ich has to be introduced into a system which it now has been in your tank. I strongly suggest you take care of this now before the ich have a chance to infest all of your other fish.

This is not a good idea for two reasons. 1) Hippos can get to 12" so way to big for a 55 gal (I think that's the size of your tank) and they are big swimmers. and 2) you can't always see ich, it can be in the gills. Ich goes through stages and takes up to 3-4 weeks to completion, which is why QT is recomended for that period of time. Taken from someone who had to deal with ich in my freshwater tank, it's TERRIBLE and not easy to get out of your tank once it's in. If you have a QT it's very easy. Obviously you will do what you want, but I won't be surprised to see you and the one who started this thread on the disease part of this forum asking "What happened?" Of course this is JMO.

i agree i really really hope tht you dont torture a hippo tang in a 55 gallon as az learly stated. if you dont listen you will see it suffer but if you listen then it shows that you are becoming a smarted aquarist. these peopl have been in the hobby for many years and i hav taken their advice and have a nic3 sw tank in my house
Oh and BTW welcome all to page 2
