Woke up this mornign and saw just that. Blue hermit in one of the cerith snail sheels. This is not the first either. I think I lost about 3 or 4 of them. An astrea or two as well. I thought I was feeding them enough and there are plenty of extra shells in there. What gives?

snails may have died naturally and shells utilized by passer by.
Shells were probably seen, coveted, plotted against, and resident removed.
In any case if you have a reef plan on contantly buying snails, and occasionally
more hemits.
It's a hard cold fact of life, your reef will constantly cost you!

I have the same problem. I also have plenty of extra shells but my hermits still kill my snails. Once all the hermits die I am not replacing them. I am going to have only snails in my cleanup crew.

Not sure if he died or was killed but just found a blue-leg the other day strolling around in a nassarius shell. Thats the first nassarius that has died/killed so not worried about it yet but still dont like seeing him in that $2 shell

I have noticed this to be a problem mainly with Blue Legs, sometimes Zebras. If you spend the extra cash and get the Scarlets it will happen less.

I agree. However, IMO the scarlets don't do a very good job. At least mine don't.

Scarlets are rock dwellers for the most part. The Zebras and Blues are sand bed dwellers so that's why they get the Ceriths. All Hermits are opportunistic.

I came home today to find 1 blue legged hermit in a margarita shell. One of my other margaritas was going across the sand from the glass to the LR (the go back and forth alot) only to get attacked and picked apart by 2 different blue legged hermits. It is like they are having their own little gang territory war going on in my tank.

LOL, I suddenly had this image of the fight scenes from "westside story" in my head. The hermits dancing along snapping their claws!

Wow, I must be getting tired.

I only keep scarlets and red legs (mexican red legged?) they dont do any harm and cruise all over. It's really cool when you see two of them taking a ride on the shell of my large hermit.
