I think I need a water cooler/chiller

chillers are expensive, yes, but in the grand scheme of things it's relatively cheap. when you look at the entire cost of a tank (the tank, the livestock (fish, coral, LR, LS), a filter, lights, shipping for everything, salt and water for changes, and electric bills for those lights) a chiller doesn't cost much. And a chiller is a lot less work and stress, rather than worrying about keeping the AC on and setting up the fans and constantly checking the temp.

I would agree with Nano Reefer on this one....Chillers offer a piece of mind, they offer more consistant temperatures and a way to regulate without running AC or haveing fans on your tank. Personally I have an open top Eurobraced tank. I would not run fans because my tank was set-up and desinged to be very clean...No hanging cords anywhere and so on. So I run a chiller.

That is funny...you ask about getting a chiller and everyone tries to talk you into some dumb ugly fans. Getting a chiller is a great idea and is so maintenence free. I have a Current chiller and I set the temp at 80 degrees and there is a plug in the back for the heater which I keep in the sump. The heater will kick on if there is more than a 2 degree temp swing and the chiller will kick on if the temp goes above 81 degrees. You can just look at the chiller and see how the temperatures are running because it will tell you the temperature of the tank and if the heater or chiller is running. GET A GOOD NAME BRAND CHILLER IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT. You will be happy you did!

LMFAO!!! hahahahahaahaa

I purchased a 1/3hp chiller w/ heater port for my 140g reef because my temp was 83-84 degrees. Used it for a couple of weeks and I was more than pleased. Temp was constant 79-80. Just for kicks I had a $9 fan from walmart laying around which I mounted over my sump(out of view). 79-80 for the last 4 months. It's set to come on with my lights. Now I have an expensive 1/3hp piece of ..... um, furniture in my garage.
Basically it's your choice. With the fan I have to add about a gallon of water every 1-2 days. With the chiller, about every 3-4 days. If you can't afford a chiller right now, a nice $9 fan would help your heat issues for now.

So are you using a fan only...or are you using the chiller?

Fan only. Its always been set on low. My chiller is in my garage. I may upgrade someday. The fan works fine for me. I wished I would have tried it sooner. I guess I was having a saltwater moment. It's worth a shot. You never know. It's funny how some things can work for some and not for others.

Yeah it seems in this hobby what works for one does not always work for another. I also have a fan under my tank by the sump (out of sight) I believe that helps a lot too...I probably add 2 gallons of water a day...I have 1 small 4" black fan in the corner of my tank that goes on with the lights...I have another one in the other corner ...IF I need it.
I will probably end up buying a chiller one day, but I bought MH lights and a sump, so the chiller is on THE LIST....
