I thought this was a relaxing hobby

I don't think I've heard my husband swear this much except when working on a car. Here I thought this would be a way for him to relax and enjoy the beauty of the tank. instead he complains constantly that he hates how tall our tank is, which is directed at me since I dictated the size. The rocks constantly fall down and stuff goes to hell and he's yelling and swearing. When will the peace come? Or will it ever?

It will come and go.....sometimes I am ready to just give up......and others, when I am sitting there....watching the fish tanks all around me, and tuning out the outside world......that's when it is worth it

My issue is the design of the aquascaping and the fact that the tank is sooo tall.
We tried to do a lagoon style rock formation. In a less tall tank, the rocks wouldnt have to be so high and this would probably work. But since this tank is tall, in order to get the coral close to the light, we gotta make the rocks tall. Combine that with the rocks being round and my reluctance to glue them into place, things fall over.
Next tank, cuz there will be a next tank to get the stuff we really want, there will be no rocks. Just bricks and sand.

I my opinion what is wrong is that you are trying to fit the tank to match the coral. Instead take the approach of fit the coral to the tank. There are some really beautiful coral that does not require strong lights and would adapt well to your tank. On the very bottom the colorful choice of mushrooms and acans threading their way up would look awesome.
You can always get a satellite MH lamp too and aim it at the sides of the tank to give it more light. You have allot of options, your tall tank is beautiful.

Cant really do more light as the canopy wont allow for it and there isnt a place to put it really. I just realized that no one saw how I got the lights mounted to the canopy in the first place. Well, if i find the camera, i will take a pic of the lights inside the canopy.
I am just not so sure about spackling up the rocks at the moment. Maybe later. I have the stuff, just not sure if I want to do it.

Let you in on a little trick go to your local hardware store if you have room around the lighting fixtures and buy some reflective tape and tap all the areas inside your canopy you can

Whatever you do,..... DON'T get any pencil urchins, I bought 2 in the very beginning and they are twice the size now.
Think bulldozer and you can imagine what I've been doing for the last 18 months.

I have a purple rock urchin that hitched its way into our tank. it has nocked over the zoas a few times so I have since pasted them onto the rock. We will see how long that lasts.
BTW - for those who have followed this from the start, that urchin is huge now. It has atleast doubled in size since we first got the rocks from the LFS. How long can he last in the tank before he gets too big and we need to think about moving or taking him back?
