I want to get an Urchin

I have my eye on some kinda species of urchin but i dont know what kind. I want somewhat of a small one, i think a long spine one is alittle overkill. Any pointers on what kind and pointers of care??

Do you have soft corals? If so DO NOT GET a Pencil Urchin....
I have a purple urchin, and it NEVER messes with my zoas or anything else....I do nothing for it....

How old, and how large is your system? Urchins eat a LOT of algae, and I've found that they starve quickly when there's not enough to eat.
+1 on the research, but you're here asking questions, and that to me at least is a form of research. lol

Make sure your rock work is SOLID! The slightest movement and these guys will take control of it. My pincushion moved rocks and corals around at it's whim. I wanted one so bad, and once I owned one, I couldn't wait to get rid of it!
Pencil urchins are NOT reef safe.

Hi,
+1 on the algae thing...They mess with a tank, I had one kill my pipe organ coral, it didn't eat it, it carried it all over the place and tore it apart. They eat coraline algae down to bare rock, where ever they travel leaves a blank trail. Most new hobbyists want coraline.

IDK....My purple urchin has never caused any destruction....it even maneuvers thru loose rock with no issues....never ate a coral, or any coraline.....

We had a purple urchin in a very established tank (180g, up for many years) and it starved to death in a few months. It was beautiful though. I've wanted another one but I'm too afraid it would be destructive and/or starve to death. Last summer we found a really small one--smaller than my pinkie nail. Of coarse our tank wasn't up then. If if find another one that small I might try one again.
Flower---don't give up your wave just cause someone was making fun on another thread. We like it!

It is pretty! Those are my favorite urchins--I like the tuxedos also. We find those all over the rocks in South Carolina, that is probably why I like them so much---good memories

Mine was EXACTLY the same as meowzers, but mine was black. He was in my 7 month old 29 and started to get really unhealthy and dropped quite a few of his spines. When I realized it was because of the food issue (spotless tank, thanks to him), I gave him away to a fellow reefer. He was saved and is thriving now.

I think i'm gonna pass up on the urchin. My lawnmower blenny is going nuts on my algae. He cleaned almost all of the brown algae i had on the glass and now hes making his way over to the outlets of my filter.

I had a couple and within a few days they ate ALL of the coraline algae off my rocks. My rocks were so clean and bare. I ended up taking them out within the week and getting rid of them.

Hi,
I assumed it was bothing people who read my posts, they made fun of me..it was silly really..I was just saying hello with a smiley. I was gone to work after I posted and didn't see this little question until now.
It's just polite to at least say Hi when you post something.
P.S.
I know they can get into really tiny spots to hide, but I’m worried about it because of all the problems I had acclimating it. It arrived nearly dry because it had punctured the bag and the extra water leaked from the Styrofoam. So I had no water that he came in at all.
I used the water from the snails, hermit crabs and a little from my tank in the Styrofoam container to drip acclimate for two hours and when it was time to get him out…trying to use a cup was a joke, it had really dug into the Styrofoam…I tried cutting the Styrofoam away and couldn’t, I landed up prying it off with a butter knife as gently as possible, with all my might. It finally released and before it could dig in again I dumped it in the tank. I don’t know how resilient these guys are…any advice.
I don’t quarantine inverts.

I wouldn't change it. I took the smiley as you just being a friendly person.

Advice on the urchin? I don't know a whole lot about them. I think they are like most inverts being they are sensitive to copper and will starve if it doesn't get enough algae. I think it will lose some of it's spines when something is wrong with it.
