They are harmless sponges. Nothing to be conserned about. Seem to grow in a healthy aquarium and are part of a natural cycle. They normally dont get to big maybe the size of a q tip. Maybe someone has a name for them I just call them Pinapple sponges.

Interesting. I found a database on sponges, and I found some that look similar, but can't get an exact match on species. Anyone have any idea either the common name or the species of these sponges?

They are calcareous sponges of the genus Sycon Sp. they are a calcareous sponge that appear in water that is of high quality, and tend to generally colonate places of low light intensity. they reproduce very rapidly and are a good sign of tank progresion.

YES! that's a picture of what I have all over the inside of my filter, and on the back of my tank. I posted about them a few weeks ago.
