Still can't guarantee it's a Kidado though. Have you posted this else where on the internet? Would you mind if I did, asking for an ID for you?
The eel could very possibly be a Stout Moray -
Gymnothorax eurostus. Very common in Hawaiian waters, and would help explain the price. Kidado's are deepwater eels from Japan, who are only caught on hook-and-line (collection via nets & divers is illegal there). A $900 fish just doesn't turn into a $40 fish much, if ever.... It probably cost the wholesaler more then $40 in shipping costs from Japan. I'm not writing it off as a Kidado, just saying thinking about it, doubt begins to build.
