If "Filter needed"

If I have a quality skimmer, live rock, powerhead I don't need a "filter" right the live rock will do the job? This is everything? (I have a heater but that's not filtration)

I don't have a filter either. Have a 125 with live rock, live rock and chaeto in the sump. The water does go through a filter sock when it goes into the sump more to keep the bubbles out than anything else. I have an inadequate skimmer that I will be upgrading next week.

1+ lb of live rock and 1+ lb of live sand per gallon of tank water makes an excellent natural "filter". I prefer 1 1/2 lbs of each per gallon, as the system will basically sustain itself. With an adequate amount of live rock, live sand, and macro algae, even nitrate becomes a non-issue. I'll take a self-sustaining natural filter over a maintenance-required-mechanical filter any day of the week. Just my 2c...
