Please click the link....this stuff is what happens when someone spews out opinion and people actually believe the opinion to be fact.
http://www.petitiononline.com/Finatics/petition.html
Please read it--it's very short--and sign it if you feel inclined to do so...failure to stand up may result in no longer receiving any fish from Hawaii (stoney coral is already illegal to ship/harvest/sell).

..this is not a joke. We're about to lose a lot of fish that we hold dear to the hobby because someone is telling complete lies "millions of yellow tangs are taken from Hawaii"
"These fish only live for a year in the aquarium and die"

Maybe more people would sign it if it actually stated what the intent was and had some real information.
Uh...
Let me try it again then...
Like I mentioned: The aquarium hobby, shop keepers, and fishers in Hawaii are about to receive a total BAN from catching fish for use in the saltwater aquarium hobby. This is not a restriction--it's a total ban.
Also like I mentioned: Lies are being spewed about these fish and these lies are being taken as fact and have even been written in popular reef-keeping articles with no references/research.
If you need more information....google is our friend.
This petition has until Sunday because they must present it before the government of Hawaii, Monday morning.

If the reefs and fish are being over exploited then perhaps we shouldn't collect them. When I google I find more evidence that they are then they aren't. It's no secret that coral reefs and their inhabitants are in danger.

My point was that on that page that has the actual petition there is very little info stating what it is all about. Not that I dont take your word for it, but I'm not one to put my name to something without it stating, very clearly, I might add, what it is that I'm signing.

So where would one look if they were interested in being made aware of this issue?

Straight from the horse's mouth
. There is a lot more real info out there on other forums, but obviously not linkable here.Google something like "Snorkel Bob endemic Hawaiian fish ban"
'SnorkelBob' is an owner of several tourist dive shops in Hawaii, as well as a co-owner of a mask/snorkel/fin company, and is on the financial advisory board of 'The Sea Shepperds.' Meaning when those radicals need money, they come to him. I believe this is the second time he started pushing this, but basically he is calling for an all-out ban on collection of endemic Hawaiian fish for aquariums. He basically wants to make it so that the only way people can see Hawaiian fish, is by using he diving companies. He does this under the false-veil that the aquarium industry is majority impacting the environment.
Sheer logic on this topic, eliminates any real point he makes. First of all, the claim they make that there are no limits on amounts of fish collectors can take is completely false. Second, significant time and money is spend to understand the impacts and effects collection has on the Hawaiian reefs, and adjustments are being constantly made. Lastly, there isn't a marine aquarium fish population out there, that can not support some form of human collection. That's the nature of SW fish. Calling for an all-out ban makes ZERO
sense.
Just another Eco-Terrorist out there, who attempts to pull at heart strings by showing irrelevant footage, misleading statements, and all-out lies, all with the secret motive of financial gain. He has a book tour coming up, and media packages planned.

Yeah, and of course he says "I don't plan on taking my show on the road"... Interesting he's only concerned about the area where his financial interests are best served. Hmm...

Oh, and a quick update about the petition that you may or may not have signed....
Today was supposed to be the day that people met with Hawaii's government but for some reason (I forget the reason) it was postponed until the 8th of December...so we'll know around that time if we will still have these fish in the hobby and available from Hawaii.
There was more than enough signatures to claim protest...so now we just wait.

So does anybody have a link to any scientific data concerning this issue. So far the best I've found was something to the effect of noticing about a 40% reduction in the amount of yellow tangs in the collection areas compared to the non collection areas. When this bill was first brought to the table a couple of years back I don't think there was any real data either way that specifically says one thing or another. I was just curious.
I did happen to catch this article by Robert Wintner (executive director of the snorkel bob foundation). http://www.seashepherd.org/news-and-media/editorial-070814-1.html I got a bit of a kick out of the part where he makes the comparison of hobbyists and pedophiles.
"We want to convert home hobbyists, not get them pissed off in a name-calling exchange. We want to shame them gently. I think of the internet pedophiles lured into the kitchen where the MSNBC cameras are rolling so the world can see them-they hang their heads, knowing their appetite is so wicked. Aquarium keeping is similarly shameful, but the perpetrators must be treated with understanding and help toward rehabilitation. "" "" (Robert Wintner)
Well, this hobby is an addiction. So maybe a little rehab isn't such a bad thing.
