ive decided that im going to buy a hamster, since the only thing in this world that likes me is my dog and my fish do depend on me but i dont really think they know the difference and anyways cant really be snuggled. so im setting up a hamster cage and am coming up with names. i cant decide whether i want to do a pair of dwarfs or a single siberian. i havent had a hamster for at least 14 years so im a little rusty. what im looking for is-
-advice/tips
-warnings
-horror stories
-not horror stories
-suggestions for names
-anything else you can think of?
and feel free to post pics of your set up/hamster/whatever because i know how much everyone on here loves pictures.
:D

The females tend to be more territorial and cranky than the males. I never had much luck with finding a friendly female hampster. The males tend to be more friendly.
They're fairly easy to maintain. Lots of different tubes and definitely a good exercise wheel in the cage is a must. Exercise balls are handy too. You'll have to change the wood chips at least once a week. Other than that, not too difficult. Feed and water.

crap. i was leaning towards a female. ok, anyways thats doable. is it better to use the wood chips or like newspaper? we get gigantic bales of stall bedding for our barn, so thats not a problem.

I had several hamsters when I was younger. I always used wood chips then shredded newspaper on top. Mine loved to make a nest. I did that with Guinea pigs and rats too. They all enjoyed it.

My kids have had about a bajillion hamsters over the years. We had several females that were friendly-but be careful getting females, once we bought two of them and the next day one had 8 babies and 2 days later the other one had 6

And then we didn't get the babies away from the mom quick enough and one of her sons got her pregnant again

Either one is a good media to lay down. They're absorbant. I prefer the wood shavings because they help curb the smell a little more than the paper but hampsters do like to dig. I think it's a preference thing. My hampsters dug in whatever I put in there and made a little hidey hole. lol

We had Teddy Bear hamsters when my oldest was 4 years old...they were her pets LOL....Well they had babies, and we came home from work and GOOD THING I went in first....they had eaten most of the babies...there was blood, feet, paws...tails EVERYWHERE
after that I said I would never have another hamster again....
So a couple years later we got a guinea pig.....what a messy noisy critter that was...LOL...BUT they are a lot more friendly towards you...Hamsters can care less if you are around....Guinea Pigs look for and want you to be near them
