Kind of a rant.
My dad just informed me that we only have one month of work left to do before we are both out of the job. Not closing up shop, just no more work to do. I thought it was going to be slow for a couple of months, but I didn't realize that I am not going to work for four months this year.
I have less than one months worth of expenses in my savings account. I am sol.
My wife just graduated college and talked to me this morning about working at subway. Lol. No one in the city or parish is hiring teachers right now. She is looking at other parishes and that's a 45min drive on average.
My car has to have $600 worth of work for me to drive it again and I don't have the money so that means I don't have a ride to get to a new job if I did have one. I'm currently riding a bicycle to and from my current job and to get groceries and water. Even my bicycle needs to be fixed.
My dad just purchased a 28k vehicle and paid 10k in cash for accessories for it. And now he is telling me that my family and I might be living on the street or at my in-laws. Pathetic. I am so upset right now. Ahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!
So, I have to find a job in 30 days. I have a high school diploma and 4.5 years of college without a degree. I hate retail and food industry jobs. I am good with my hands and learn quickly. Please recommend some job areas that I could look in to.
Now I have to go home and start working on a resume and doing finances and making a voodoo doll of my dad.

Politician, oh wait, already covered that LOL!
It's time to sever your work relationship with Daddy. Loyalty is a two way street.

I'd look for another job....quicklike.....and take it.....sounds like you will need daycare....and with NO income...you will probably be able to get help with that until you get on your feet

Are you an owner of the business? If not, why can't you collect unemployment?
Never been officially employed full time...
I've thought about starting my own shop. I know how, and my dad has even encouraged it. However, this time of year is extremely slow - and there are no customers. I.E. I'm out of work.
I'm going to have to find something soon. We technically already have a daycare set up with my wifes parents. They take care of Emma during the day while my wife is in school. Since my wife doesn't work right now, ... that's her job until she gets a job that pays and Emma will go back to being taken care of by the grandparents. Childcare isn't a problem.
The problem, however, is paynig $950 in bills next month as well as paying the $600 to get my car fixed so that I can go to my new job.

Have you asked about unemployment or are you assuming you can't collect it? I'd call just to make sure.
Houston isn't that far away. Perhaps you need to consider relocating to a place where you both have better job prospects. I am not sure if this is a recent opening they have but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Yes, I am just assuming that I won't get it.
I would rather open my own shop than work for another taxidermist.
I just need a couple of temporary part time jobs to get by. My wife is going to work too.
I started putting out applications everywhere I could think of this evening.
I'm stressed beyond belief.
I'm considering making custom cabinets on the side. I used to help a guy do that and I know I could do it myself.

It's tough out there - I know it..... as a 20 year experienced corporate jet mechanic - I've had to begin kinda all over working on peoples boats & seadoos after a year of being unemployed. it sure as hell don't pay 145k/yr but then again since I'm doin it "freelance" and for no paticular shop I can make EASY 30-40 bucks an hour, and I've been busy at this for 2 months now. I'm sure you can find something that you can either do on the side - or for extra $$$....
Good luck for sure

Beg and borrow to fix the car then drive pizza's. Best bang for the buck. You are driving around with no boss over your shoulder. You can listen to the radio. You get like 8-9 bucks per hr and money from the store per delivery, plus tips. Friday Saturday and Sunday night you could clear 200 bucks cash plus a pay check. You gotta do some dishes and mop the floor. But the pay is good. You could work like 20 hrs per week and make full time money.
I drove pizza's after college while looking for a long term career. I would Recommend going to a large chain that is busy as heck in a nice area. Better tips. I always said if I won the lottery I would be a pizza delivery driver just to stay working.
Best of luck what ever you do. Sometimes its good just to get in somewhere entry level and work your way up. Every place I have ever worked notices hard work and dedication to the job. I would say go for any place you can ro that and nice up.

Beg and borrow
Sooo,...... You got $600?
Just kidding.
My brother in law does that. Hates it. I hate to drive. I prefer to bike actually. I know I'm weird that I don't like to drive, just never have. If I were to get a driving job, I would get my CDL and drive a delivery truck of some sort and make more money.
I called a guy about remodeling houses. Looks like I start June 1st.
If I could jus get a new radiator fan and some new spark plugs and wires for my car I could get by with the transmission for a while. The main thing I gotta do is get my car fixed so that I can get to a new job.
Im not above digging ditches for plumbers either. Whatever it takes to keep a roof over my head and food and diapers for my kid.

Hi,
So sorry to hear of your troubles and with the new baby too...
You are a handy fellow and if you go to an old folks community, um like the mobile home parks for seniors only kind of place. Make up some fliers on your computer to do some handy work including mowing the lawns and such. My late husband did that when he was out of work in Chicago, and had so much work he couldn't do it all by himself. It is just little jobs like hanging ceiling fans and fixing doors, but the older folks can't do it themselves and have a little in the budget to help them pay for needed work. I spend about $240.00 each month on the 2 handy helpers I found. I also paid another fellow $600.00 to strip the paint off my back porch and seal it.

I missed your post....June 1st...YAYYY. With a job in hand you might be able to go to a good friend or get payday loan (last resort) to get the car at least running to get to work.

I am also going to try to pick up handy work as I go. Flyers in known senior citizen hot-spots sound like a reasonable deal.
The deal with that guy and renovating a house fell through. He's post poning it. :(
I guess I am going to also try to get jobs doing cabinetry work and building aquarium cabinets and canopies. I'm pretty good at that.

I guess we are both early risers. LOL Me because of a baby, of course. Oh well, stuff happens. Just got to go with it. Right now I am trying to cancel a few services that we have grown used to and I'm digging out my food supplies. Rice and beans - yippie!
I guess I am also going to turn off one of my fuge lights and one powerhead in the display.

Reef mentioned that "Houston isn't that far away". You thought about roughnecking? The Ford Shale Project out by Hondo is booming. I think they're still looking for workers. Most of the workers are coming from everywhere and renting out rooms and houses to share. Supposedly some good money in it. It's be tough to be away from the family, but you could make some good money and get back on your feet until you can decide to open your own shop down the road.

I'm sure I can find enough handy man work to last me four months. Just got to hustle.
There are plenty of jobs listed on craigslist - most of which require me to have a working car.
I don't want to leave my family right now to work a temp job - not even considering it. Especially since it is only four months.
I'm sure the local grocery store needs bag boys. LOL

So what exactly is wrong with the car? You say "radiator fan, plugs, wires, and transmission". Is it overheating, not starting, tranny slipping? Make/model?
