I'm sure I can find enough handy man work to last me four months. Just got to hustle.
There are plenty of jobs listed on craigslist - most of which require me to have a working car.
I don't want to leave my family right now to work a temp job - not even considering it. Especially since it is only four months.
I'm sure the local grocery store needs bag boys. LOL
What are you doing for Benefits? First couple years of a kid's life is pricey. If you could land a job with benefits until your wife can land one, even if you are only home weekends for 6 months you'll be ahead, especially if you can sock away some money so you could branch out on your own. I don't know about Texas but in Wyoming where the wages weren't very good previously when the gas boom hit 10 years ago they were paying able bodied kids right out of high school 18 bux an hour with full benefits to do grunt work. You gotta do what you think is right but you need to really look at the big picture. I don't blame you for not wanting to be away from home.

Got my car fixed today. Works very well! The spark plugs and wires and distributor cap were replaced. I even fixed the radiator fan. All the fluid levels were checked as well. Now that I have a working car again I can branch my search out.
I'm not leaving the state. The big picture is four months. If it takes bagging groceries during the day and stocking Walmart shelves at night that is what I will do. My wife will get a job. I can just feel it. If she does, we will be much better off and I will be able to work and go to school and get my degree next so that I can start a great career and earn those benefits.

What is your wife going to school for and how is the job outlook in your area for her chosen field?
Elementary Education... and it looks grim.
Her final semester of school... they declared a hiring freeze for all teachers in the city and parish that we live in. She is trying to get a job in another parish currently... about 35-45 minutes from where we currently live.

Sometimes you just gotta move where the jobs are....
35-45 minute commute is nothing. Most people near me are surprised if you dont have at least that much. Right now I have a 40 minute drive and my wife is close to an hour.

Hang in there Seth, you are tough guy, you will make it. Things are tough everywhere, my job cut us down to 4 days a week, since last November, I took a night job at local gas station 3 nights a week to help met bills. Also did what you are doing, cut all the fat out of our house hold bills. I like beans & rice, lol

Ugh, I'm sorry to hear this. It's a tough market out there, but you have a LOT of skills you can bring to the table. And like you said....diggin' ditches isn't such a bad deal these days. Whatever it takes to pay the bills! Keep yer chin up; I've got my fingers crossed for you.

Thanks guys.
I put some ads out, selling a few things off. Definitely not my tank though! Lol. Im also offering custom aquarium stands and cabinets. Im talking to shawn about maybe building acrylic tanks. Seeing what there is out there anyways.
I put in an application for maintenance work at the local hotels. I also put in an app at some gas stations and grocery stores. Trying to be organized with it and calling the managers to make sure they got my application. Lol. Every little thing helps. Im thinking about doing other handyman work. Just whatever will get me through till my wife can work or i go back to work.
In the end, it will all work out. We will have a place to stay regardless of what happens. Even now that i am working, i have less than $10 in the bank. But, at least i have my rice and beans and ramen saved up.

LOL Sounds like when I was out of work. Which may be happening again soon, as the contracts are drying up here. Last time I sold off a huge chunk of my Trek model collection (yes, I'm a geek) to pay for a few months worth of bills. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do to, man.

I never use to have a thing to sell.....I do now, BUT after working so hard for it....I would find other ways....
when I first came to OK....it was rough.....I got a job in an E-Z Mart making pizza :( I was able to bring leftover pizzas home too.....and believe me.....that was a big help too......we had 6 kids in the house then..... then I ran the front register WHOOPIE......LOL.....Then I got a job at a sewing factory sewing darts on shorts.....day after day.....UNTIL I was very lucky to find the job I have held for 14 years at the church.......was not a lot of money, BUT I was able to survive and feed my family on it...AND most importantly....Be there for all my families needs....
I would have shoveled doodoo if I had to......and I think Seth you will find that when your family is in need.....you will do most anything to survive.....

Seth I agree with an earlier posting.....I'd leave the family business.....The bottom line you have to worry about your "little one"......Family business isn't providing as you need. Worse case if things get hectic at your dad's shop you can also help out where you can.......

Life is not always easy for sure. I started college at 28 and also the month my daughter was born(still working full time) because I saw the old guys in my career unable to financially retire. Got the job I wanted and got furloughed 4 months later. Got another job and got laid off 4 months later. I was crushed and wasnt sure what to do but I managed to survive.
I got called back to work 2 years ago and life is treating me pretty job now. Life just has a way of sorting out priorities sometimes.

my nephew was in the same boat 25 yrs old and his father sold the business he went into the air force reserve an a mp and now is a local police officer.the reserves or national guard might be options to you.

I've talked about that with my wife - and even though I would be up for the national guard or airforce, my wife can't support it. But that's ok, I don't know if I could even get through boot camp. LOL
So, I have been looking around here and there trying to find a little work. I hope I can find something soon that pays around 12 and hour.
Once my wife gets a job and things settle down, I am considering going back to school for some sort of degree. BUT, for now, I have go get through the next few months.
I am also considering selling off a bunch of my stuff that I don't need, and donating a lot. Just no space.
