i tried using a salifert iodine test kit. I am always showing 0 as a result, even after i tried testing kent concentrated iodine.
Does anyone know of an iodine test kit that works?

Nope. Salifert is the best you're going to get under $200.

when adding iodine to your tank, how do you know how much to add? just basing it off hte directions?

Mixed reviews here. Some say that if you do frequent water changes you never have to add iodine. Others say that if you have a large population of shrimp or other iodine consuming animals,you should add 1 drop per 50 gallons per week. Somewhere in the middle is where I stand.

You can probably find a Lab nearby that will test your water for Iodine using spectroscopy for about $200 per test. The test to request is "Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectroscopy."
