This information is a bit outdated.
It was shown in the late 80's that Iodine is actually the typical cause for molting problems, not the cure.
Excess Iodine will cause crustaceans to molt prematurely. A lack of Iodine will not prevent a good molt.

Thats my understanding also....suppliments of iodine don't seem to be needed...and can actually cuase problems instead of preventing them. I rely on the salt mix I use to maintain required levels of iodine....I have a test kit but it seems to be rather difficult to accurately/consistently measure levels of iodine....and if I can't adaquately measure the level I refuse to attempt to suppliment it.

I've read that dosing iodine will speed up the life cycle of shrimp, causing them to die young. =c(

LOL. Everything else was right on in my opinion. Iodine has been a myth for so long it' even in most reef books.

sp. = species.

LOVE that goby. Was on my to-get list until I saw the Yasha. Tough competition but the Yasha was ready and able.
.....and as a side note they have paired.
Thanks to Bang and NM, once again my trusty LFS was right, just do your water changes and your pistol will get enough iodine. You guys are so smart.

I have cleaners in with my pistol and aside from the occasional bull-doze by the pistol all is well between them.

no.......species. As in Alpheus species. At least that is always what I understood it to mean. We need Bang guy back to confirm or deny this for us.
I have only quick pic I took of Mr. Yasha while temp acclimating him the bag.....hopefully much better picks to come!

Alpheus is the Genus. There are several species in this Genus. My personal favorite is Alpheus bellulus aka the Tiger Pistol Shrimp. They have an entertaining personality. Be warned though, they are not lazy. They build caves almost 24/7 and are never happy with the structure.

It does.
Alpheus sp.
means "all of the species in the Alpheus Genus".

Thank-you Bang, my brain was starting hurt.
Yeah, that Barbershop is pretty sharp looking. I think I actually prefer it as well but think my Yasha is the cat's meow just the same. :joy: Reminds me of a chinese dragon or something.

I have a yellow watchman goby paired up with a tiger pistol shrimp. My story starts out like this... one day the shrimp dug his burrow right up against the glass front of my 44 gallon tank. Oh, how happy I was! I had a direct view into their burrow and could see the inner workings of their symbiotic relationship! Sadly, my tale now takes a darker turn. I had a scooter blenny. What a cute and fun fish! Always jumping at the glass edges, doing a little dance for me, and he was friends with my ywg before my pistol shrimp came on the scene. *sigh* One day I wake up and come out to check my tank, and there in the middle of the underground burrow is my pistol shrimp with my adorable little scooter blenny firmly in his claws... and he was STILL ALIVE! The little guy wasn't moving other than gasping for air as my pistol shrimp used his claws like a can opener, prying him open. The horror! I couldn't stop watching, but I couldn't get him out, either. My goby just pushed past as if nothing were happening, coming and going as normal. Eventually my boyfriend had to put a sticky note on the glass so I could stop watching the tragedy unfold. Anyway, that's my story. I really like my pistol shrimp, and I even plan on getting another for my 12 gallon reef tank, but be warned. They're carnivorous!
