Irresponsible Aquariasts

I also agree Jon I dont think your price was alot of money either I would have charged them more for me to have to clean that mess.Your prices seem very reasonable to me and it's shocking that they didnt get you started on that tank right then.
And I too applaude people that realize they have gotten in over there heads and decide for the sake of the fish to let someone else have them who can give them the proper care.
Just my two cents.

id make sure you're up to date on all of your shots before you stick your hand in there
was it not obvious to these people that something just wasnt quite right?

I believe it. If you keep up a tank it's actually very little work regularly, sorta like cleaning a house. I keep my house clean instead of doing a big cleaning every once in a while.
I also think your prices are normal, the guys out here that used to run their cleaning out of the LFS (until it changed ownership) charge the same, $50/hr but a little more for the monthly commitment and they get a lot of business with that rate, so I totally understand passing on such disgusting tanks.

Can you image how much money they lost?!

I wouldnt be worried about the money. Its the fish!!

I think a lot of people see a pretty aquarium and just jump in. They buy a tank and fish and some fish food and off they go. Then they lose interest or get discouraged because they haven't done any research.
Wish you were here in the San Francisco Bay Area where cleaning runs $75 per hour.

I do believe you on that one. I had been on vacation so I was over due on a water change and well....I like them clean (not to clean of course
). Plus I had two kids that kept interrupting me.
And to be truthful, I like working on my tanks, so to me it's not work.

Ugh, those pictures are so sad...those poor little fish. They didn't ask to be in that situation and they can't do anything to take care of the situation themselves...they're totally dependent on whoever takes responsibility for them...ugh...that just makes me sick.

yep... i hate that. if someone tortured a fish no one would care but a cute little puppy is a completely different story

Its pretty hard to get a tank to be that bad. I mean you would have to never touch it, and in my house never look at it because every time I look at mine I am cleaning a smudge here, moving something there LOL

Its called total neglect and respect for other living things. He told me that "it happend in like a few days, last week it was clear"

Wow, that sure looks like an awful lot of evaporation for "a few days", I didn't think coffee evaporated that fast, or is that a tank of mud? Maybe he's hoping that all the water will evaporate so he can actually see into the tank...

That was a goldfish tank. They can get nasty if they are not cared for. These are pond fish, in the carp family. I do not agree with allowing a tank to look like that but it is not at all uncommon with goldfish tanks. My friends tank looked like that not long ago. I did several 70% changes on it and it looked great. All it needs is a little algae fix. It isn't the water at all, it is the algae. Add some algaefix and see how nice that tank becomes
It is funny how people can take one glance at something and jump to all kinds of conclusions. $50/hr is about double what tank maintanence actualy costs. $20-$25/hr is normal.

although this may be true, people buying the fish probably dont even know they need knowledge or a game plan and such... i think the people who come here are people who are genuinly interested in the hobby and would like to do it right. other people who just keep killing fish dont think they are doing anything wrong and then after they have killed enough fish they throw in the cards...
if only they knew to do some research...

hey there's lots of them (irresponsible aquarists) they come on the boards and ask for advice ,then don't listen ,then scream cause all their fish are dead, and then you have the ones you're having to clean up after that refuse to do the 10 minute max of daily work to keep their tanks clean and maintained. i bet you run across alot of sick, dead and dying fish because of neglect and laziness.

Yes, we do have a lot of irresponsible aquariasts on here. Not only your example, but the ones that go out and see something and they "gotta have it" and dont even know what they got. Then they come in here and ask questions about it AFTER they buy it, stick it in their tank,it eats their inverts, fights with others in the tank and causes havoc on thier entire system. Then they somehow look dumbfounded about it, scratching their heads and wonder why people come down on them soo hard. Plus not to mention, that as you said they dont listen anyways. They then go post the problem again, in another room, hoping that someone will side with them. Being that all they really are looking for is someone to be on their side to say that it wasnt a bad choice to buy that fish or something to that sort. Or how about the ones that know that particular fish dont do well in small tanks but say they bought it and that they will eventually are going to upgrade but not now, they dont have any money to do so. (and yet they had money to buy the fish) I understand that this is a place to learn something about aquariums and reef keeping, but if they ask and insist on ignoring the advice thats given and their ignorance needlessly kills a fish, they should be banned. They are certianly not interested in getting educated or have any respect for the livestock and its requirements, but more in here to see what others think and have the "well, i am going to do it anyway" attitude. These are the same people that after a few months/years, give up and say that everythign died and the store sold them sick fish or didnt tell them that it didnt get along with the fish that they already have. They throw the blame on others instead of looking in the mirror and taking responsibility for their stupidity. Not to mention the people that come in right behind you and try to discredit your statement that someone may have asked and you have given an answer to but yet, failed to give any advice themselves. Its as if they bash it because when "they" tried it, it didnt work for them, so it must not work. Its also amazing to see that those same people have aquariums much like the ones in the photos or are in other rooms asking the questions 'will this fish get along with the fish i just bought?" or I cant figure out why evrything is dying in my aquarium, all i have is 7 fish in a 30 gallon" something to that effect....You know, the same people we are talking about.....
