Is Downsizing to a Nano Tank Possible?

My dad's wisdom of "The only dumb questions are unasked ones" applies here. Despite that, I'm feeling quite stupid about asking this question!
Anyway, I currently have a 65 gallon tank and have had it set up for 3 years. I'm wondering if I can downsize to a nano tank with some of my live rock. Use some of the water from my current and I'd be ready to go.
Or do I have to start all over again with cycling a tank?
Thank you for taking the time to answer this. Perhaps I'm wrong in thinking that it would be that simple.

Are you planning on using the same sand too? You just need to be careful about stirring stuff up.....Loys of people upgrade and downgrade using existing rock and stuff

We were thinking about switching from crushed coral to sand. So, in theory, I could start putting sand in my current tank bit by bit to let it cycle and then add it to the nano?
We haven't been happy with the crushed coral.
Thank you.

sand was one of the things i regreted when first starting up my 36, when i down sized to a 30 i switched to crushed coral.
reason i did this was be i could only position my PHs a spcefic way or it would make a sand storm. i dont havw to worry about that any more.
id say you could just switch everythign over if you have good filtration. thats what i did
