Is extremely poor grammar grounds to be made fun of?

I'm a somewhat reasonable person. I don't expect the average person to know much about astrophysics or advanced economics. I even give most people the benefit of the doubt when it comes to politics, as their respective party and their talking points can be quite hypnotic.
However recently, mostly because of Facebook, I have become increasingly incensed with the average person and their use and knowledge of the English language. Here are a few snippets from my feed just this morning of some friends (and their friends) comments:
"I seen this and had to say some thing"
"This hole thing is bulls**t"
"Obama would be dead tomarrow"
"How rediculous is that?!?"
"I had to rite cause this is BS"
I like to think that if you are going to put yourself out there, the least you could do is attempt to make sure you are using proper grammar and spelling. Maybe the rest of the country has just gotten that lazy and dumb, I don't know. I just cannot stand it.

Those examples aren't really text lingo....just stupid. They don't bother to read what they've typed, but expect others to do so.

Some people actually have learning disabilities and therefore they can not help themselves. So making fun of someone with such a disability is nothing more than just another form of bullying in my eyes.
My wife's niece has such a disability. She's in her mid 20's and if you were to hear her speak in person she simply sounds like you're everyday average person. But if you tried to have a conversation with her over the internet you might think that you're actually conversing with a 3rd grader.
Anybody who can help themselves but chose not to on the other hand could be considered fair game, I suppose. It wouldn't hurt my feelings.
However, the question posed in this thread sounds a little bit less like a topic that actually matters very little to anyone other than a grammar Nazi and more like a help me stroke my own ego so that I may be able to feel superior to others type of thread.
It's just your view of how the rest of the world should work. And anyone who doesn't conform to such ideology must be an idiot. I've known plenty of people over the years who we could consider intelligent and have a great deal of book smarts but have a serious lack of good ol fashion common sense.

And therein lies the problem with this country, and the direction it is heading in. You say that someone like myself simply posts this to "stroke my ego". Yes, that has to be it.
You should be offended by people who willingly (not counting those with learning disabilities and the like) don't care about spelling and grammar. It's not an "ideology" to be able to spell and use basic grammar. It's just further proof that we as Americans keep letting things get a little sloppier and don't act like it's a problem. There used to be a time when people took pride in what they typed, how they spoke, how they dressed, the way they looked.
Now a days, it's like some big free for all. Don't like dressing up to go out? Cool, just throw on some sweatpants. Gotta belch or relieve yourself, don't bother being discreet, just do it in front of everyone! You know, fatty foods taste way better than healthy, so I'm just gonna turn into a glutton because, what the Hell, it doesn't matter how I look. Maybe it will just get to the point where every person who chooses to not care, can get their own reality show! That way they can at least cash in on their apathy.

Your mistake is that you believe that way back when, everybody felt this way or felt that. How do you know that EVERYBODY took pride in grammar? You don't so you're just throwing that out there. There are far more educated people in this country today than there were LONG AGO. Let's not forget that not everybody in this nation grows up with the same privilege or the benefit of a good education. But pretty much everyone these days has access to the internet. It isn't really funny, if anything we should probably consider it sad.
If this thread was meant to be anything else other than what it is then you probably would have come up with a more appropriate title IMO.
Sorry if that smokes your stack.

There are more educated people in this country today than LONG AGO, because there are tens of millions of more people than LONG AGO. At one time, not very long ago, the United States was looked at as one of the best educational systems in the world. This is the reason we have the majority of the best universities in the world. However, due to the apathy of the general public, education has taken a back seat to sports and entertainment. If that's alright with you, and you think that's what's good for this country, that's on you.
I however, would like to live in a place where my children actually have a future, and a solid foundation to call home. As long as parents keep allowing their children to slack off and not care, it won't get any better. So if that makes me an a**hole to actually want people to have pride in their lives, then so be it.

As long as I can understand what is written, I don't care if it's perfect grammar, or spelled correctly. It only bothers me if I mess up.
The only thing that really bothers me are the really long posts without any breaks in the paragraphs, and/or it's just looks like one very long sentence..... It's just so hard to read.
I try very hard to not make "fun" of anyone. I also have no idea why insulting someone, for whatever reason a person thinks they have earned the right to dictate the "rules" to others.....is referred to as "Making fun"

Everyone makes spelling or typo mistakes, but some text is hard to even read. So, if you can't pay attention to what you are trying to write, then why should I read it?
One of my minor pet peeves on this forum. Someone is allegedly desperately trying to find out what is wrong with their fish. They will post, "MY CLOWNFISH IS DYING!" as the topic, then in the post, "what is wrong" Insert a fuzzy picture.
That's it.

I didn't say that I felt that it was alright. In fact, I believe I said it's sad more than it is a reason to make fun of people. But I don't own the nation so as an individual I can not control it's outcome or it's current state of affairs. But I think you're confusing the volume of people in this country vs percentages.
I don't know too many people who don't dream of a better place for themselves or their kids. But there have always been the have's and the have not's as far as I can see. IMO, the reason why we are falling behind in education has some to do with parenting, and some to do with the fact that kids are stuffed into class rooms like cattle these days because there is not enough funding to go around to educate them all like some of us believe they should be.
Should we make fun of you if you happen to be less physically capable than anyone else? Is that you're answer to the big issues, ridicule people for being different than you?

Generally speaking I give people a break unless they put a target on their back. One such person called out someone on the Denver Post board for "There poor grammer skills", I swear to God. It got brutal.

I may not like....or agree...with spelling, and grammar.....BUT I NEVER make fun of people.....I'm not their teacher or parent

I don't make fun of someone's grammer or speeling unless they put a target on their back either. But, we do have spell check as one of the tools available to us on these forums. I'm sure even someone that can't spell at all can click a button.
What bothers me is not when someone misspells a word but when someone comes back to correct them... for example:
"You goin rite now?"
"Dude, your grammer sux." <--- irks me to no end. Like the person correcting them knows more about the English language, when they honestly know just as much as their peer.
I'm kinda with 2Quills on this one though - not everyone has the capacity to learn on a level that is "optimal" and not everyone will go on to become scientists, engineers, pharmacists, publicists and business moguls. Just accept it - that there has to be someone behind the counter making my Micky D's hamburger.
Not everyone is as smart as you are - and you can not assume that they are playing ignorant either. Unfortunately, there are some people in this world who will not do as well as others because of their disabilities or their general intelligence. So, my advice to you is to ... be happy with what nature gave to you and stop complaining that everyone else can't be on your level.

Some of the problem does fall on the parents. Some parents don't give a crap what their kids do or how their kids represent themselves. I, as a parent, expect nothing but good manners, and taking care of themselves and act appropiately. I am not there BFF. I care.
Now on the other hand, I do allow them to express themselves, as long as they do in respectfully and take into consideration the other persons feelings. Some times there is no way around that but I want them to "think".
As for their grammer, well, once again, I am not their BFF so keep it between you and your buddies but keep it real in my house, and god forbid......... pull up your pants!! :p

Kiefers? Seriously? I thought you were like in your mid 20s... now I hear you have kids? Jeez did you just grow up fast in my mind. lol.
I think a lot does have to do with the parents. It's not the school systems entire fault - parents have to want to care as well, and some of them just don't care. I have even heard some parents of a certain ethnic group not to listen to their certain ethnic group teachers... which is completely beyond my understanding.

I have to agree with Corey on this 1.....Clemson you sound like my boss every morning...."Tuck your shirt in".......I understand you wanting and expecting better, but not everyone shares that same thought.....Honestly who cares how the kids text or chat between themselves as long as they are respectful, law abiding people and can hold an intelligent conversation and have a job!!!!!! Your gonna tell me that growing up you didn't have some slang or such that you used......
