Is it "Neurotic" to lock your doors at night?

My wife has told me that I am neurotic because I insist on locking the doors at night.
I say - normal people lock doors at night.
Are you "living in fear" if you lock your doors at night?

I would defianly say not at all. I have some pretty shady neighbors and my girlfriend has said she heard someone on our deck checking our doors and I have seen my neighbors coming from an area that could only be to get to my back deck, plus if you gt some one who likes to steal and your door is unlocked bam they sneak in and take your stuff at best, in my younger days I definaly new how easy it was to sneak around someone's house while they are sleeping but I have changed my ways, not to mention som crazy

who want to do more than steal, better safe than sorry

I don't lock my doors. God help anyone who walks in here at night.

I guess if you absolutely insist on having the doors locked, and like you can't sleep without them, that is going on neurotic. Also, I guess maybe where you live, like if you live in an apartment complex, and all a thief has to do is walk down the hallway, trying front doors till he gets an unlocked one, that would be where I'd always have the door locked.
But for me in the house, if I'm already in bed, etc, no way I'm walking all the way to the front door to lock it. But I usually will lock it, 'just cause' on my routine, check the tanks, etc... I've come home to a front door wide open and a garage door wide open. My fault both times, I didn't even shut the front door all the way (wind blew it open), and the garage door had it's end-stop off whack. Nothing was missing, so I feel my 'hood is pretty safe

I make sure our door is locked. I'm alone with our girls most of the nights and our house is secluded. Easy target for anybody who really wants to come in. When I was pregnant with our twins and hubby on the road most of the days of the week, we had a second alarm keypad installed in our master bedroom. Mainly at that time it was if I went into labor or had a seizure and couldn't get far from the bed and he wasn't home.
I could tell you a few stories of me calling 911 in the middle of the night when our doorbell has rang. Worst was an ethnic guy standing on our porch barefoot and wearing a t-shirt and a car parked on the driveway with a few more guys in it. That happened 3 nights in a row and the best part was that it started the same night that hubby got back on the road after break.
If you end up at our house at that time of the night and are ringing our doorbell, you are behind the door with no good intentions. It's a good walk from the road up our driveway and there are houses closer to the road than ours.
So, we do lock our doors well and turn on the alarm

A couple of years ago, I woulda agreed w/ the wife. But I have accidentilly left my garage unlocked twice. Twice in my life and both times, somebody stole stuff.
Once was my purse that was in my van, and once was my motorcycle.

So I think thieves check every door every night now.
So I agree with locking them now.
I'm just glad I'm not the one who has to remember to do it every night.

Most crimes are facilitated by opportunity. If you have a Security Company sign in your yard they would go to the next house. If the doors are locked at the next house they will go to the house with the unlocked doors and no dog.

im in a very rural area with minimal to no real crime or anything... we ALWAYS lock the doors, as do most ppl in the town. it takes all of 2 mins to go lock all your doors and windows if it even takes that long. its not living in fear, its called being smart and using common sense lol

I live in a fairly small town in BC and I still lock my doors - when I was a kid and lived in the Arctic we were in an apartment building and I forgot to lock the door and a bum came in and was using our toilet!!
My husband works night shift 2 nights out of every 8 (6:30pm-6:30am) so once in a while if I think I've forgotten to lock the door I get His dog to come with me (not mine, she'as a terrier x, his is an american bulldog lol) and we go downstairs and check the doors and windows.
Yes, I'm a little neurotic.

I wouldn't call it fear. I would call it "Peace Of Mind'. With pyscho's out there like Richard Ramirez (Hillside Strangler) who walked into unlocked homes, and perverts kidnapping little kids (I have a little girl) you don't get any "do-overs". Shoulda, coulda, woulda, doesn't work. Like SilverDak, I wouldn't take a chance even if I lived in a rural area. And like bigarn, my house is "locked and loaded". My daughter know how to shoot!

To me, going to sleep more vulnerable than you need to be is a bit odd...

i keep mine locked during the day when iam home. i now have my wife locking the door during the day when she is home also. never can be so safe.

its me and 2 teenage girls and a 6 year old boy- so yeah we lock the doors- all the time- in fact most of the curtains usually stay closed too - i dont trust people
