Like I said in my first post they thought they could get $800 for it (had it in the local fish wrap for a month) and lowered it to $500 and the lady who was having the garage sale did not want it moved back into her garage. We live south of the major metro area, there were storms moving in and it was the end of the day when seh called me to come and get it.
It was a perfect buyers market.
Heck I just bought and -- gas powered car for $5 and sold it on ---- for $110. It is all about sniffing out a good deal.
I'll post some pics tonight if you would like .... or if you don't believe me (or just to make people jealous) :D :D .
I originally offered $200 but when they came back with a solid $500 I upped my offer to $250 because the over flows were worth it to me. My wife told me I was crazy and they would be offended and never sell it. I told her that there is no room in her garage and her son has no room for it in his new place ....
Hey I've cleaned it all off and will build a canopy for it in the next week or so. Built some durso's for it and a new spray bar ....
Heck just bought a new fitting for the RO filter - so I will start cranking out water tonight (fingers crossed).....

Hmm...well, I'm willing to accept that I'd pay a premium for really knowing the history and status of the tank. I went back by the store and tried to negotiate him down to no avail. He's not likely to be willing to part out the lights and tank since it is a fairly unique size hood--the odds of him selling the hood without the tank are considerably slimmer. I told him the only way I could do it then is in payments and he's still thinking on it...we'll see...

Overanalyzer - I believe you. I would just second guess the quality. But that doesn't mean it ISN'T actually good quality. Sounds like you found an awesome deal. But those kinds of deals are few and far between.

It's an oceanic - it doesn't leak - and I agree I don't think I could find that deal again if I tried ..... sometimes it is better to be lucky than good!
Now I will admit the stand is somewhat hurting and I am planning on adding some braces and a coat or two of new paint .... and it is a bit taller than I'd like .... and I don't think I would've drilled out both side but rather the center and I would never buy the NO lights since I will be looking @ MH. And I would not have bought just a plain RO unit but rather an RO/DI unit and.....
So it is not exactly perfect but I have wanted a 125 ever since one of the LFS's around us had a scratch and dent 125 for $365 plus the cost of the stand.
Whooo - there is an idea for you as well leigh - talk with an LFS and see if he will get a dinged tank. This one I am talking about was a 125 with a scrunched top from a forklift. No damage to the glass but the upper edge was scrunched .... its a thought. The Tank dealer can't sell them for full price so the LFS in our area gets 'em in and sells them cheap .....

No, I am not going to go outbid you or anything. I cant afford sh*t right now, and I dont have room for it, but the reason that if the tank is coming from either of these sources than it is probably a good deal. However, dave has been know to rip people off before. He tried to do it to me until he realised that I knew what was going on with SW tanks.
Just a heads up, thats all.

i still say the best deals are in the paper, the tank i was talking about was a good deal but there are deals just like that one in there all the time, and most all are set up and still running, overanalyzer you got just such a great deal,(buzz sounds a bit jealous:D ) (just kidding dude), but don't get that glazed i gotta have it look in your eye, leigh, think this through is this the tank that i will be happy with? will i like the lights? can i afford it after i get it? etc... i know it's just like seeing a kitten it's so cute and cuddly when you first get it and you just cant resist it, but then it's a pain in the butt 6 months later.
good luck

I have that garage sale, newspaper used tank fear too. I've passed up some deals because my inner scaredy cat was saying.....leaching copper? what went wrong? are they lying to me? why can't they take the tank to China with them? I did buy a whole 55 set up, livestock and all from a friend for $75.00 cause he was moving to Hawaii. I only wanted the 90 lbs of lr and gave the rest to a my stepdaughter...hehehe got her addicted too!

Thats a sweet ank Jerome. Maybe it runs in the blood but I said no to the poll also. I got my 90g RR, three NO bulbs and ballasts, a stand all for I think $100. They wanted 300, but I held out....Also if you check a certain other Board they have a huge I mean HUGE selling forum. Somebody in AZ for example was etting rid of a 240g tank for $400, and that included a stand. Just an example of whats out there.

leigh, assuming A^2 is Ann Arbor, where are any lfs's there? I'll be Ann Arbor saturday afternoon, would like to check them out.
Oh, and just in case you were interested, over in Livonia, on 5 mile and (shoot, I'll find the name and cross road today after work and post it) but theres a lfs that has a 180 gallon sw with stand and everything at someones house going for only 500. Pictures showed it fully stocked.

Thanks for all the input folks! I told the lfs I'd only do it if he'd let me make payments and he keeps saying he wants to think on it--which has made me decide to opt out...I gave him a day and a half to think on it--I don't intend to wait on the sidelines while he sees if he has a better buyer. Thanks for the tip Daniel! Unfortunately if I do a big tank now it has to be acrylic as I'm likely to move in the next couple years and moving a big glass tank would just be absurd (or require more energy than I have)...but I will be keeping my eyes open (and if anyone knows of 120-150 ish sized acrylic tanks being sold, keep me posted :D )... also, Daniel, in Ann Arbor there are 3 fishstores-- Fish Doctor on Washtenaw just east of 23, Coral Reef on Plymouth (in a lil strip mall--you'll probably see Lucky Kitchen a chinese restaurant--it's in the same strip mall as that--um...and if you're hungry when you're there I suggest trying something other than Lucky Kitchen or Manhatten Pizza--they both have great food but I think your stomach needs to build up a tolerance to some of the things I've seen crawling around in their kitchens!) and lastly there's Aquatec Engineers right where Stadium and Packard intersect--that's the only one of the three I refuse to go to. The owner's a jack*** and their stuff is overpriced and lousy. And mostly the owner is a jack*** .
Thanks again everyone for all the advice!

Best of luck in your search leigh, every now and than theres a steal in the tradin' times magaizine. Every time I've called on a big acrylic though, it was sold that day! Oh well. I'll definately ride down and check out the two stores this saturday-thanks for the info.
And thanks JustinX, I just picked up a Catalina Goby from there the other day! They're always a bit to pricey though.

lfs had a 200g for 500 bucks... man if i wasnt contemplating moving my girlfriend to the garage so i could fit it where all her dressers and stuff go.
it sounds like a decent deal, but i have seen similar sized tanks for a lot less up here. there are always 100+ gallon tanks in the paper, some starting at around 200 bucks, so maybe i am just spoiled being in a larger city.
at any rate, you can determine if it is a deal for your area by pricing out the tank at other local fish stores... see if you can't get near that price with someone else with new stuff. if you cant get close to the price, then heck yes, it is a deal for you, and jump on it!
it is all geographics i think.... i see the best darn deals down in florida, darned if im not close to being as far as i can get from there and still be in the continental us :p

I didnt' vote and here is why. I have All-glass 125 that I got on sale ordered thought LFS for 175. Sump came from CPR dealer and cost me 350 with overflow. Lights were aroun 325 for the starting(4X48 inch VHO). Stand/Canopy is less than 300. Now we are at 1150 with all new stuff and don't have to worry about breakdowns for a while. I don't worry about what was in it or will it fail it's all new stuff and can be found even cheaper than what I found it if you shop around. I have seen 200 bucks thrown away due to stupid that's on sale and cheap. The next week I found better deal. Email me and I will send you some cheap links to good stuff.
