Is this enough lighting for a clam?

Just curious, I love clams but I am not sure if I have enough light for them. Well, I dont think I'm getting any clams because I dont think I have enough light, but is 192 watts of pc lighting plus 30 watts of actintic VHO lighting be enough for a clam in a 50 gallon tank?

How deep is your tank?
I just got my first clam about 3 weeks ago. I have him under 250 watts of MH (20k's) in a 110 gallon tank. I cant remember the depth. But he seems happy.
Being that they need LOTS of light, i hate to say, IMHO, you prolly dont have enuf.

In my friends 46 gallon tank, I think he has 152 watts of orbit pc lighting and he has a clam. He put the clam sort of wedged between two rocks at the top of the tank. It looks good the last time I saw it, I dont know if it is still alive.

i have heard that derasas will do it. i ahve the same thing minus the VHO, but i am looking to get a 110 VHO or some T5 or something to add on. I have a 40 breeder (16 inches high...i didnt know that they made 50s that were 16... the only 50s that i have seen were like 24... but anyways....) the only problem with a derasa is that they get to be like 2 feet!!! im not sure about your 50,but my 40 is only 36 inches long........ i dont know if i want/can FIT a two foot long clam in there. plus they probably get about 16 inches high.

For how long? Ive had the same clams in my tank for almost 5 years under MH lighting.
Ok i will put you in a 4x4 room and throw food at you every now and then. You will be alive yes, but flourish? Nope. The point is if you are going to keep clams keep them under MH why bother with sub-par lighting. If you are going to do that keep something else. Anenomes and Clams need super lighting, and not this 5 - 6 - 7 watts per gallon crap. They need MH lighting plain and simple. If you keep them under anything else your wrong.

I am going to have to agree with Bobothewizard. They might be alive, but are they happy???
Clams like it on the sand, I know i would net be happy wedged into a rock.
But, as a great man once said, "your tank, your choice"

Wooh Wooh Wooh! I was just curious, I really don't know too much about clams, and I was just seeing if you can put them under pc lighting. I was just getting some input to see if I could, but I guess I wont. Does anyone have them under pc lighting? Maybe you can tell me how they did?

what about under VHO? I am going to have 840W of VHO on my 5' 100g tank that is about 2' deep, about 21" after sand. Could i have a clam?

nope I wouldnt think so.. in theory it is 5.4 watts per gallon, but when dealing with VHO it is not the actual wattage of lumens going... I would highly recommend a MH, with a T-5 supplement. remember the golden rule...you get what you pay for!!!!!! it is so true in this hobby, I am finding out now.. the T-5 is an awesome lighting, you should really go for that.. email me to find out where you can find a great price on them, i just picked up 2x54w 48" (46.5in.) T-5, ballast, wiring, sockets for 115 bucks shipped.....Im using a 400 wattMH supplemented by 2x54 watt superblue actinic T-5's..this is a true wattage of 508watts with super lumen output.....

ive been keeping my crocea alive and well under 6 T-5s (4 White & 2 Actinics 324ww in total) my clams about 5" under the surface and alive. It doensn't grow much and is starting to become darker so ive decided to upgrade to Mhs for the sake of keeping my clam healthy. The lights at present aren't enough but worked ok for the first 6 months... and i know of a couple of Anemones which are being kept under T-5s and are directly being battered by powerheads and are alive and growing! All the anemones have clowns hosting with them. I kept an anemone under 225ww of marine-glo fluoresents for 2 months, at first it seemed to suffer then i added abit of flow to my tank and the anemone started looking healthy (Found its finale place directly infront of 2 powerheads and about 2" below the surface) and then i gave it back to its owner. just adding my little bit of smartiness...

so let me jump in here then. my ultimate goal is to have a clam or two, maybe an anemone or two, and the rest of lower lighting corals on the sides on banks... scroll up, will I have enough lighting to maintain clams??? i intend on putting the high light corals/clams in the center of the tank directly underneath the MH, while the lower light corals to the sides... I have a 75 gallon, 21 3/8 inches in height, 18 1/2 width, and 48 long

As long as you have a nice MH + the rest (water quality ect) you can keep clams but an anemone would probably irritate the clam because it would also fight for the light and clams get irritated if they get too much current and thats a problem cause anemones need current.

the MH is a 20,000K radium
and i really am not looking into anemones, just a thought... I am more concerned with clams, and other corals.. and the water quality is a given... etc etc. i was just more concerned with the light aspect.
