Is this hobby always so frustrating?

Well it actually will depend on general tank hygiene and sometimes with how you mix salt and keep its salinity. It is sometimes really frustrating and I even remember a friend who just started with it and designed everything first before putting in water only to find out that the sand and bead particles he used would float.
It is sometimes frustrating though that comes with anything new that you would undertake especially if you are not that sure with it yet.

wtf is this dude talking about?i feel like i need to go brush my teeth after that post
Don't be mean, the person is saying every new beginner makes mistakes when setting up a tank for the first time, and someone he/she knew used beads that floated when they filled the tank with water. The person is new so cut some slack, ....Please.

I thought the same thing actually and thought he read through previous posts and added in his 0.02 to the intial problems, not commenting about where the thread ended up! I'm sure us newbies have you guys banging your head against the wall at times.....he sounds like he's been at the SW hobby for some time!
Have a great day everyone...as I'm sneaking in a post at work...lol

Taking my mp 40 back to the store. Well past break in period and the thing is so rattly! They said they would look at it and replace if necessary, hope they mean it! We didn't use any pin spacers (didn't come with any), the mp10 is fine, it hasn't been dropped, any ideas?

pin spacer? the mp has the large rubber cup you need to take off and turn to the glass thickness setting.dont worry .i bought the battery backup and it didnt work.they sent a new power adapter and its good now.very dependable company.they will take care of the problem.

Well this is embarrassing actually....I took it to the store and they tested...no issues. Tried 2 different aquariums, not a sound....there's a rubber thing that goes against the glass and then the motor on top - that's the spacer, we don't need it because our tank is really thin glass. I thought we tried this and it didn't work...but will try it again. I wasn't concerned about the Vortech, just the store, but the guy I dealt with was awesome! I'm sure he thought I was a complete idiot though....

I've got all the boxes from all the new equipment packed up and stored. Reading the forum there's no doubt that at some point we will go bigger, so not getting rid of anything. While at the store today I was looking at bigger tanks and know what I want - but not for a long while!!! I like what we've got going on right now anyway.

Update on tank....I bought an API test kit yesterday and tested my tank-20% water change on Sunday.
Salinity 1.025 (refractometer)
Ph 8.3
Calcium 460
Kh 8
Phosphate 0.25
Nitrate 0
The new lr is showing coriline algae (sp) and new dry rock is a fluorescent greeny yellow with what looks like green algae growing on it. Should I be concerned?
Thanks

new base rock will always get the green color for a little bit i wouldnt worry.as long as the tank is healthy the coraline will spread to it in no time

Awesome! It's cool to watch it come alive! Was going to pick up fish this weekend but puppy just had minor foot surgery, big vet bill! Might have to wait!

Been a while since I updated this thread. I was quite upset when I first started it and now, I am so happy with how things are progressing. I've been trying SPS, def a harder coral. I added a HOB refuge and added cheato about a month or so ago....wow, the tank has really cleaned up, these pics are from mid Nov, at the end of Nov, glass is even less green, lots of coraline algae and great coral growth. I've just started restocking fish, have 1 bicolor blenny, 2 sebae clowns and one cardinal. The coolest new thing I've found is a reddish plate coral, not sure where its from, just realized it was alive...no pics yet. The bubble coral is what brought me to SWF, it has done amazing...its tentacles are now 6" long and I've had to move the button and fox corals away as it could reach them. My other first coral was the frogspawn - that sucker is the size of a basketball when fully open - I counted 9 mouths - that's all I could see, tentacles in the way. I just wanted to show you guys who constantly give advice, that some of us newbs do listen, even though it may take awhile...I've actually gone back through this thread for some refreshers, and to pass on to newers newbs than me ;-)
Thanks again!!
