Is this sand ok?

I have been trying to decide what to use in the bottom of my aquarium. Would it be okay to use the sand from my local beach? I live in south Texas. There is a reef about 50 miles offshore. Surely it has the same sand under it. The sand is tan in color. Has anyone ever done this and had success? I would love to hear from someone who has done this.
Thanks,
Julia

Local beach sand has too many contaminants (boat oils, public use, etc). You don't want that in your closed system tank...

All this about sand from Wal-Mart. I went in and the kid/guy in pets dept said to just use the bags of decorative gardening gravel. He suggested the blackish grey granit. Its super cheap, and no small sand will get stuck in my bubble filter. Plus you can wask off the rocks easier than sand. Wal marts fish is good looking, they should know.
just my .024 worth.
