And FYI... I quit smoking in Jan of this year (I miss it!!). Smoked for almost 17 years. Never felt better!!! I have a lot more wind on the ice now.
Good for you.....When I quit 7 years ago...I had smoked for 30 years....I started smoking in grade school :( and really had not remembered a time in my life that I did not smoke

Well, I play hockey a couple times a week now. Tuesdays are just pickup and Thursdays are league games. My knees are very sore about 2 hours after I get done playing. Stairs are a bit painful (tank is in my basement so I have to go up and down a lot). But the knees feel pretty good all things considered after the night I play. I played a bit of basketball in the driveway last year with friends... We lowered the rim and were dunking a bunch. The next day I thought I needed to go to the Dr. my knees hurt so bad. But hey that's what they make pain relievers for right??

That is awesome for the two of you. I am going to quit as well.

My best advice......Weight watchers...it is geared for folks who enjoy eating and teaches great recipes for healthy eating instead. It allows you some wiggle room for junk food, also to go out and still you lose weight. They even tell you what is good to choose from the menu at certain restaurants. You may feel very motivated now but a month from now you may want to satisfy that sweet tooth, and the house of cards come tumbling down. With WW that won't happen. I joined on-line and it costs $17.00 a month, best thing I ever did for myself.
Being physically able to exercise and bike ride is awesome...that will help you get in shape super fast. Our local YMCA also offers personal training for a small fee, you might check with the one in your neighborhood and see what they offer. Often the local YMCA has a full gym and Olympic size swimming pool, and it doesn't cost an arm and leg to join. They have a sliding scale to pay and at top dollar (my income allows no breaks) $76.00 a month for both me and my mother...very affordable.
If you set yourself up for being able to cheat on the diet (but not really) and able to afford the gym without busting the budget. You will have the tools to help you stay with it for the long term.

Same here. Ran track and cross country all through high school. 4-6 miles a day was pretty average. I'm about to turn 36 and my knees definitely aren't what they used to be. Keep it low impact. Biking is good. Got my wife one of those recumbant bikes a while back because she has problems with her knees but she has no troubels using the bike at all. She started using it again a couple monthes back and has dropped close to 30 lbs I think. Me, I can eat like a dang horse, still the same weight I was back in high school...actually a little less, I used to work out a lot more back in those days so I had more muscle mass. I need to start exercising again though and quite these damned cigarettes.
I got a recumbent bike several years ago. When the ambulance delivered me to the emergency room the docs couldn't quite believe that I had so badly injured my back unpacking
the bike. Anybody want to buy an unused, partially assembled recumbent bike? Getting old does, indeed, suck!

Thanks for the advice!!!
I thought about the YMCA, however I don't have one by me. They all closed in the last 5 years. Also, I am thinking of going with a chain gym. I like to travel and want to be able to use the gym when I go away.
I'm going bike shopping today. I think that will call for a trip to the shore tomorrow so I can ride the boardwalk on my new bike.
