Hey Anthony!
Welcome! Sounds like your definitely on the right track. Don't be scared. I was at first because of how everyone told me how hard this hobby was to succeed in.
Its really not and it will definitely educate you. Ive learned a lot. My guess is that your son will love it and probably be quiet successful at it.
As Mony said. after the first few months, amazing stuff starts happening. Many symbiotic relationships are born and the tank will almost take care of itself. stuff starts appearing to perform a certain task ( I found a tiny brittle star in my tank last night to take care of some of my detritus . No idea where he came from. now I have two!)
Then they say its too Expensive. While it is an expensive hobby, there are some things that don't have to be. ( your new setup((awesome IMO)) was a great deal I think). There are also tons of DIY, (
) for the simple to the complex depending on your level of confidence and/or competence. Just starting out doesn't have to be expensive, however as you progress in the hobby the better equipment does cost. but 9 times out of 10 its worth it.
Anyway, Welcome! This forum is full of both people who love to help and talk fish AND great livestock and supply's for purchase. Oh yeah were a visual bunch who love looking at pretty pics. :)
Good luck!

That price sounds good to me. I payed more than that for just my live rock. I wouldn't say that you can't have coral with that setup. It really depends on what kind of T5 fixture that is. Anyone that says anything requires metal halides is full of it in my opinion.
I think there are more then enough people here successfully running T5's with SPS, Anemones, clams...

Just wanted to thank all of you for your valuable info. My son and I are driving about two hours tomorrow to go look at this 72 gal set up. I got some positive feedback from a few of you guys so I think it's worth a look at that price. I will keep posting and updating everyone from time to time on our progress. Thanks again everyone

I went to see the tank with my son today. It Looked pretty good. My son loved it but I think he would take anything with saltwater in it at this point. The tank is a 72 bow w/stand wet/dry sump with bio mesh and built in protein skimmer. Fluval cannister. not sure which model 305 or 404,405 two power heads overflow box. retro light with 2 t5 bulbs. He put in these little purple LED lights in for at night. 50 or so lbs of live rock. The only thing that I don't know if I like was that the back part of the tank was covered in Purple algae. Some one said that was corraline. Don't know what that is. I was wondering if I can scrape that off or should I keep it in there. If it's beneficial to the fish i will leave but if not I don't think I like it. It's cool on the live rock but I am not sure about on the tank. It's even on the powerheads and the other tubes that are in the tank. Whats everyones thought on this and as far as the whole transport of this tank. The guy told me the more I clean the worse it is. He told me that I have a cycled tank already. The tank has a 10-12inch lionfish. some eel not sure hermits damsels. He offered then to us but I think we want to get our own fish Even the Lionfish is awesome we would like to get a small one and watch him grow. Should we take the fish and bring him to our local petstore and barter. Is that done at all. Look forward to your thoughts everyone. I know I asked alot of questions. thanks a bunch

Sounds like a great setup, as for the transportation you will have to drain the tank and then find a way to drive it to your place.. The purple stuff definitely sounds like coralline and if it is not going to bug you too much I would leave it it will greatly benefit the tank, however, if you drain the tank when you move it some of the coralline may die.
As for the fish that is up to you, I personally would pass or as stated try and sell them to a LFS, or even trade for a smaller lion and again as stated watch it grow.
Last what are you planning for water, are you going to be using his? And are you planning on keeping the LR submerged while in transporting?
