No, not having these kinds of lights wont hurt the fish. Fish just need enough light to see. But stronger lighting is a must for SPS corals, amemones, and clams. Im do not know every reason why actinics are helpful but I do know they serve as a secondary light and help simulate sunrise and sunset when they are set on timers.

Hey Az, since we have the same lights I was wondering if you could tell me how to assemble them and how everything works. My lights came with no instructions or even a list of parts. Did yours? I have some pics here of a bag of tiny pieces that I dont know what are used for, a set of white and black wires and a set of white and blue wires. What do I do with these? I also have some pics of one of my sockets. Are these the same sockets as yours? From looking at your pics it looks like your like sockets extend all the way into your reflectors. Mine dont do that. Is there a way to adjust them? Also you are supposed to take the blue film off the reflectors right?

If you wanted these type of lights I would highly reccomend these reflectors too. They are the mini lumenarcs. With these you only need 2 bulbs instead of 3 or 4. These still cause some heat and fans in the canopy would be very helpful. What are the dimensions of your tank? The amount of wattage depends on the size of the tank and what you want to keep.

What kind of tank are you planning to have? Fish only? Reef? It really depends on what you want to keep.

All I can tell you is yes, take the film off.
I can't explain the rest but here is my husband to give you the details......
First off, I didnt use the supplied wires that came with the sockets. I bought some short (like 4 feet) extension cords from Lowe's and cut the plug end off, removed the short wires that were on the sockets and wired one end of the extension cord to it. The other end of the extension cord, I soldered to the wires from the ballast and covered them with heat shrink tubing. You could also use the wire nuts that came with the kit.
The sockets mount to the reflector with the supplied screws and nuts. The wing nuts on the mounting bracket is what adjusts the socket in and out of the reflector. The reflector didnt come with any mounting hardware though. I just used screws long enough to go through the wood frame on the top of the canopy and a fender washer inside the reflector for better support. I also supported the socket to the upper frame of the canopy with an "all thread" and nuts.
If ya need more pictures let us know. I didnt take too many pics while assembling (wish I did though)...

For a 75 gallon reef you could go with 2 150w MH bulbs.

Im so confused about my lights. I dont think I got everything that is supposed to come with the kit. There are no nuts and screws to mount the sockets to the reflector. There are no wires coming off of the ballast. On the ballast there is a cord that plugs into and outlet and on the other side there is a place where you would plug something into it. The strange thing is is that there is no plug on the end of the socket to plug into the end of that cord attached to the ballast. There are just 3 wires at the end of the socket's cord. How do I hook this up????

Heres what I am talking about. Pics of both ends of the ballast and the wires on the end of the socket cords.

well from what i see youll need a "male end " to attatch those wires to so you can hook up to the ballast, youll also have to pull back some of the insulation on the ballast plug end " the female end" not the part that plugs into the wall, to see wich wire is white black and green etc... make sure when you wire up the male end to those loose wires that you match to what you have at the female end.. black to black , white to white, green to green.

I believe this is what my husband did. He's out of town right now, but will be back tomorrow night. I'll see if he can go into further detail, but I'm sure 75bownut said it well though.
