I am considering gettting a lawnmower blenny to keep my sand bed clean. What are the pros and cons to having one and will he keep the sandbed clean?

Hey sorry to bust in on your thread but you had asked what corals I was looking for in the sac. trader thread. Email me at radiolotek at tmail dot com. Thanks

Great fish, won't do a thing for your sandbed. A fighting conch, some cerith and nassarius snails, and an atlantic cucumber are good options for the sand. Sandsifting fish do more damage than good to a sandbed by eating the needed infauna from the sand. Lawnmower blennies will rasp algae from the rocks and glass. What size is your tank? How long has it been set up? And what is it you are trying to remove?

I have 12 nassarius snails and lots of hermits. Would nassarius snails eat the light brown algae that develops on the sandbed or just move it around? I will get more if I know they won't starve to death. I don't over feed at all so if they can't live on algae alone I wouldn't want to buy more. My tank is a 125 and has been set up for 6 months. Trying to get rid of the light brown algae that develops on the sand just before I'm ready for a water change. I do weekly water changes. I run my 150 hqi's for 8 hours and my pc's for 10, 1 hour before and one after the metal halides. Moon lights at night.

Sounds like it could be either diatoms or cyano-bacteria. Is it spotted and dusty looking or slimy? Check your phosphates and nitrates. What kind of water are you using? How often are you doing water changes? How many fish in the tank? Do you have a sump and skimmer? What is the PH and Alk reading?

Yes, they are very cool fish and have great personalities.
As mentioned above, though, they won't touch the sand. They mainly hang out in the rocks, and eat algae off them. I hear they are tough to get LMBs to eat flake/frozen food, and many slowly starve to death. Luckily, the one I got loved whatever I dropped in the tank, and he got rather plump. Unfortunately, he got sick and died.

I have had a LMB for several years! He is the "true clown" of the tank! By far my wife and my favorite in the tank! Eating; OMG..the dude has a pot belly beyound belief. He will eat anything that I put in the tank! My wife even wants me to get more; but you can't or really shouldn't keep more than one in a tank. Anyway; GET ONE!!!

LMB's are algae eaters... although mine eats anything I put in the tank. Like toungetwster's he is nice and fat. He still feeds off the glass and rocks all day long but he's always first in line at feeding time.
Mandarin are meat eaters feeding mostly on pods and such in the tank.
