The degree is JD which stands for Juris Doctor. I set up my own firm pretty simply... got a cell phone for clients, got an office and started taking a lot of court appointments for the experience. Fortunately, I have a lot of people that have helped me get started by referring me clients. After a while, the clients start referring people and things grow from there. I've done a little advertising, but IME, referrals are where attorneys generate business. I'm going on my 6th year in practice now so my client base is pretty well established.
