so its safe to assume that the par rating will be higher towards the top... whats an appropriate par level for sps to be kept

280 PAR or higher from what i have seen. start low with the sps and high with the lamp in your 10g. then move the sps closer to the top and see how it reacts. i would also not recommend the 40degree lenses they will burn whatever you have in the 10g. start with 80degee lenses.

Thank you Mastertech for stepping in.
Also, keep in mind there is a lot more to keeping SPS healthy than lighting :)

That sounds about right for the PAR at the top of the water from what I can remember.
Agree with the 80 degree lenses, you want to spread the light as much as you can. Remember these lights are light the Japanese spot lights, even with the 80 degree lenses. Start them up higher and then move them down towards the water surface until you get the coverage you want.

thanks guys, everyone has been more then helpful. I do know theres alot more to sps then lighting but also know that without lighting you have no shot. But I will def get the 80 degree now.

Considering you are not going to find T5s for a 10 gallon, LED.
Actually that's not what I said ..... Reading comprehension for the loss.... thanks!
So... Lets say you did buy this overpriced T5 fixture.... Then what? Current bulbs? Gross... good luck finding small T5 bulbs with decent colors for a fixture that no one owns. Assuming you do... then what? 6 bulbs is going to cost you over 100 bucks in addition to the 3 you are already spending on a 10 gallon. I mean come on, common sense... You can buy 2 PAR38 LEDs by EvilC66 and a fixture for 2 hundred and be better off all around in looks, light, energy and everything.
my comprehension must be terrible. because the way i read it your very first post said he wasn't going to find T5's for a 10 gallon. go ahead and get your story straight and try to make me look stupid again. after going off on the guy with the turf scrubber i'm suprised the mods havn't removed your posting privelages.
its one thing to debate what is better and or disagree, but it is entirely another to tell that poster he doesnt know how to read.
Go ahead and say what you want, im not replying anymore to this thread because the poster has the info he was after.
AJ,
Sorry for the above post in your thread. I hope you found my input at least somewhat useful :)
post us some before and afters of your tank with the new LED's when you get them.

long thread, thats pretty cool.
he spent 300 per fixture, that's 900 for his 75 gallon tank. and thats DIY
he did say in there that it was overkill if you wanted the light lower though, so maybe he could get away with less and take off his optics lenses for more spread.
his application being that high just wouldnt work for everyone. but if you can do it and get away with it like he has, why not.
Thanks for posting spanko

just ordered the Par38 with the 3 blues and 2 whites. Might get the powerbrite all blue stip to compliment it too.

Of course pictures will be necessary once you get it installed over the tank.
