LFS sold me tap water.

Yeah....
So, yesterday I bought water from a new source,... I wanted to support my new local fish store down the street. I purchased 5g of saltwater and 5g of freshwater.
I went home and... I always double check my top off water with a TDS meter because of an incident a few years ago. So, In went the TDS meter in the new freshwater from the LFS. 95!
So, I said... naw, this can't be right. My meter must be off or something, right? ... So, I triple checked my last top off water from the water store... gave me a TDS of 1.
I said to myself... you know what... just to make sure that I am reading this right... I'll check my tap water.
.. and I got a reading of 97.

So, puzzled again, I zero'd out my TDS meter and turned it off and back on and rechecked the water store water... 1. I went back and double checked the LFS water... 95.
My LFS just sold me dechlorinated tap water.

... and for that matter, their salt mix is also dechlorinated water with salt.
Moral of the story - Just because your live fish store sells it, doesn't mean that they are selling you clean water.

That is some BS!!
Are you going to call them out on it??
I think a good moral to this story is:
When it comes to water quality, don't trust anyone but yourself to make your RO/DI water or mix your saltwater.

I honestly dont think the guy knows what he is doing. He doesnt drill glass or acrylic. He never has quotes ready for a standard tank or reed ready tank. He doesnt have much livestock. Some of his fish tanks have cyano growing in them really bad. Some of his soft coral frags were starting to melt. His only display tank has a variety of different corals, but his sps corals are showing tissue recession and some of his lps corals were as well. Im all about supporting local fish stores, but im not spending $180 on a 2" common orange bleached orange short tentacle plate coral.
I dunno. A lot of work to be done if he wants to make some money. There is a lot of potential there, just needs a little work.
Im taking the water back and suggesting money back or refund. Im not paying $.50 a gallon for tap water or $1 a gallon for some added salt.

My guess would be that their RO filter has gone bad and needs to be replaced. I'd first give them the benefit of the doubt. Ask to see their filter...

He probably cant pay anyone.
I just got back from the fish store.
I asked to see his filtration. He showed me. Not very impressive.
I Told him his tds reading was 95 and tested it in front of him. Then he said "ive never heard of TDS before" so i had to explain it to him. Then tested my clean water to show him the difference. He didnt seem concerned at all that he was selling tap water for $.50 a gallon. Seemed to not even care.
If that is the way he feels about it, i think he lost my support. If he had shown some inkling of concern or at least thr ability to listen learn and take consideration,... It would be different. I know everyone makes mistakes but i believe everyone should learn from them. He didnt. Sad.

That might be scary. I saw this stores once the pre filter was so brown and scummy I wanted to run away. He is the one I bought all my ick infested live rock from. Did you ever test the water you get when you buy fish, from LFS not from online stores. You might understand why fish don't survive.

We have a few of those shops around here, I don't support them. There only 3, I will buy from and the one I'm a club member of is starting to loose my business. The best one is 45min from my house 1 way.

That is just sad... When the customers know more about fish and equipment then the owner of a LFS. Who the heck told this guy to open a store??

I asked him that when he first opened. He said that he had a passion for fish and enjoyed it so much at home that he decided to open a store and take a change of pace in life and just wanted to quit working at JCPenny as a store associate...

Yeah, he lost my business. The part that got me is where he didn't even seem to care.
Oh well, I'll just keep going to my original store and keep ordering online... unless I see some pretty good quality shipments come in at that LFS... then I'll have to set up a good quarantine system. lol

Unbelievable. Happened to me also. They sold me treated tap water with salt mix.
At least the guy is willing to admit that he is lacking knowledge. My LFS that did it to me refused to let me test their water before purchase, in fact they didn't even have a TDS meter in the store.

lol

Yeah, I wouldn't be going there anymore either. Especially since he didn't even seem to care. That's... just...
As Saxman stated... PFFFFT is all I can say.
Usually LFS like this don't stick around for very long. Oh well, you tried!

If he doesn't know what he is doing...Maybe you can get him to hire you as a consultant. You used to run a pet store and your help could be just what he needs.

I know you have a very full plate....
Well, since you want to do business there... I'm sure you want the fellow to do well, and not kill off fish in the process....tell him about your concerns, and then tell him about this site so he can get the help he needs for free.
