Parents in Illinois are outraged over a move by a local high school to scrap its girls basketball team's trip to Arizona over the Grand Canyon State’s new immigration law.
The Highland Park High School varsity basketball team has been selling cookies for months to raise money for a tournament in Arizona.
Now, after winning their first conference title in 26 years, the girls are being denied the opportunity to play in the tournament because their school had some safety concerns -- and determined the trip “would not be aligned” with its “beliefs and values,” Assistant Superintendent Suzan Hebson told the Chicago Tribune...
...“The beliefs and values of China are apparently aligned since they approved that trip. … I mean, I don’t understand that reasoning. I really don’t,” Michael Evans told Fox News....

Hopefully someone gets what's coming to 'em (demotion to school janitor)...
They muddied it up. If they were legitimately concerned with safety, I can possibly see that as a real reason. Violent protests, etc. However they tossed the "beliefs" jazz in there, which has no place for a school team.
What's funny too is "beliefs and values" coming from one of the worst areas in the nation, in terms of corruption, scandals, etc...

For as that goes, in a budget educational crisis across the nation... All sports should be out and fully paid individualy by parents of the players. Pay too play for your child. Not just cookie sales for trips. These programs and coaches should be the first to go.

Yeah, if you gotta make cuts that's where I would start too but this wasn't a cost cutting measure, it was a political statement.

I think it was a safety statement, wasn't it?

No, they said the new Az law didn't reflect what the school stood for.
You’re correct, if you only read the Fox slant, however, they did provide the real journalist article link that they were providing commentary on…
"Safety concerns partly fueled the decision, but the trip also "would not be aligned with our beliefs and values," said District 113 Assistant Superintendent Suzan Hebson. That explanation, though, smacks of political protest to parents upset by the decision.
I guess it was both Hmmmm. Why did they leave that part out -lol

"School administrators say the Highland Park High School girls basketball team will skip a tournament in Arizona because of safety concerns and concerns over the state's new immigration law.
District 113 assistant superintendent Suzan Hebson says the trip "would not be aligned with our beliefs and values." Among other provisions, the Arizona law makes it a state crime to be in the country illegally."
You tell me? Did it suddenly become unsafe to play softball in Arizona? Guess the schools trips to that bastion of safety and security South America as well as China were much safer environments.

Guess you didn't listen to Darth about throwing out political terminology whenever you want to argue against something. If you're going to blame a specific group, at least pick the right one. 'stdreb logic' states that if anyone does something stupid, they must be a liberal. The Oxford Encyclopedic English Dictionary defines the word liberal as "giving freely, generous, not sparing; open-minded, not prejudiced ... for general broadening of the mind". Hmmm, seems to me that this Superintendent is being predudiced against Arizona and their new law. She also seems a little closed-minded about the immigration law itself. So what's the opposite of liberal? Maybe Conservative?

Liberalism, Democrat style
Giving freely, of other peoples money
Open minded, as long as you agree with them
Not prejudiced, except against those who hold traditional values
And they generally don't mind broads

. The only place they use those definitions in a political sense is the classroom.

I find it amazing that a couple people would defend this move. As stated China's standard and human rights violation fall in line with the schools belief system. Just because some of you are against the law passed in AZ (Ironically enough one of you was complaining about the illegals right after complaining about the law) you are willing to support a Hypocritical decision of a school? They also claim safety concerns, hmmmm....china is safe?

You know I think you are onto something, there is a big difference between political liberalism and the hippie/counterculture liberals I grew up around and still know a few of.
I miss the good old days when the "Man" was the "Man" regardless of political party. LOL

It's pretty funny but my older brother who is still a long haired freaky people from the 60's had friends who would get into political discussions with my redneck, oil field working, Utah refugee dad and would agree on a heck of a lot.

You should pass a ban on Californian's too, I know a couple people in AZ who would love that law. You could always start a new water war with them. I am sure AZ would have cal out gunned in this day and age
