I have read that hippos were already popular before the movie. I would assume yellow tangs were also because my dad had them before the movie ever came out.

still not much of an answer from the ol' timers referencing to the first post.
were they so popular?

Clownfish were popular in the 70's. Hippo Tangs were available but not super popular. They were called Regal Tangs back then.

I think the movies intention was to discourage kids from keeping fish in aquariums. Obviously they failed. I still give them kudos for trying. They didn't directly tell people to keep fish in aquariums, they actually did the opposite.
That doesn't change the fact that they did some damage.
A few months ago I was reading an article that explained how clownfish were becoming extinct due to our hobby. Even though it is wrong/exaggerated, it still helped to show people the damage.

You make a very good point

I was just thinking about how the kid who wanted the Nemo was evil. The message was to not follow the example. I can see how some kids would think that if you have a problem, just flush the fish and they'll go right back where they belong...

A LOT I bet! Good thing "Nemos" are somewhat of a hardy fish even if one of it's fins is smaller than than it should be!

That's Suffolk County Fish and Reef. Not one of my favs, very overpriced. They're never rude to me because they all know that I know more than them. I've heard that they're rude a lot.
GC Fish and Reef is a new store on Jericho Turnpike in Centereach. Only been open for about 18 months.
