Okay not going to work for me. They only make T5's in 24 " being the smallest. I need 12" so that will not work for the T5's so its back to PC's.
My tank is a pico tank. I now have another question about mouting legs.
If the top of the tank measures 12" and your light is 12" will mounting legs work??
What about if the tank is 15.5" and the light is 12" will mouting legs work on this as well??
My present tank is the 3 gal pico and I am considering moving everything over to my 5 gal instead but want to make sure that a new 12" fixture would fit on it with legs?

they should. the mounting legs extend like 2 inches more from the side.

Hey would love to do MH but they are way to expensive there plus I would be sleeping in the dog house if the husband knew that I payed $400.00 for this fixture which is lovely.
As for the Nova Extreme we don't carry these here in Canada, bulbs would be another issue. Its much easier for me to buy stuff that I am able to get bulb for etc.
So we don't have alot of selection like you all in the USA.
Thanks all for the replies. very much appreciated

Ah another Canuckastanian!

You can buy them from online dealers.
I got my Reef Octopus extream skimmer from Salty Supplys in the states. The good thing now is that our $ is pretty high.
Have you though about LEDs I like em better then anything that I've seen so far.

Get a PAR 38 LED from nano tuners. Screw into a desk lamp and you have enough light for even some SPS

okay this is what i have come up with they are by marineland and are :
Double Bright LED Lighting System 18-24"
6x1 watt white
3x 60mw blue (450)lumens
Now would these be better than:
1. coralife 36 watt 12" PC
2. Current USA Nova Extreme 18" 36 watt t-5
3. Current USA Nova Extreme 12" 18 watt PC
If these LED are better than the PC and t-5 please let me know

Honestly with a tank that small and since you only want to keep softies any of the choices you listed would work.
My choice would be a PAR 38 lamp from nanotuners.

Yes I just don't know what to do for a new fixture. I just bought a new 5.5 gal tank so I can move everthing from my 3 gal over. My rics are getting way to big and everything is cramped so this will be better. No I will not be going bigger after this.....

I would love those LED lights but unsure of how well they would do for corals. So I guess I have to decided on the Coralife 12" 36 watt pc or the 18" 36 watt t5
I have been hearing more negative from the t5 so still have to so some digging here before i order.

The PAR tests for LEDs are out there if you know where to look. People are keeping SPS under them without problems, so its more than enough for rics.
What you are not going to get with LED is all of the heat going into the tank, and on a 5gal tank temperature fluctuation is going to be a concern. That, the low wattage, and long life more than make up for a slightly more expensive initial cost.
On the PC/T5 thing, at that length I don't think it's going to make much of a difference. Only negative things I've ever heard about T5 are people that switched from halides and miss the shimmer.

okay what i have heard is that, if i were to get this 18" t-5 it is not better than the coralife pc 12" both 36 watts too. Because the t-5 are not the HO ones so they are considered equal to the PC fixture. Is this true??
Do you have the HO t-5 fixture Nissan??
Then I read the LED will not give enough light penetration to do anything for the corals, I am confused really.....

I just moved everything over to the 5 gal tonight, my one ric is so huge and my gsp rock is massive and no room. Plus I think the critters will like it better to especially my cleaner shrimp. Tomorrow i will move things around a bit more. So now this tank is 16" across the top, but I am so torn as what to get for lights.
Nissan can you tell me exactly the lights you just bought and what kind of bulbs come with it??
