This is actually pretty old news. Since they were first spotted off of Grey's Reef in GA they have been seen from New Jersey to FL
They do have predators. Sharks can and will eat them, frogfish seem to have no problems eating them as well. Plus the myriad of fish that enjoy picking ie. big angels and queen triggers. I not believe they will have as massive an impact as people are fearing. They only eat smaller species of things and are relatively slow growing population-wise. There are so many invasive species as it is that one more really isnt that bad. Orbicular Batfish are found now in the Keys along with numerous others that shoudnt be here. Besides at the rate they eat and reproduce, the commercial fisheries will have long since wiped out the shrimp and minnow populations before lions play a major role.

Think a wasp sting and multiply that by 10. Same treatment though, soak it in warm water. If you are allergic to bee stings you might be in trouble so follow whatever you would do in that case.

It doesnt exactly feel pleasant and could be fatal if allergic. But remember they are not an aggressive species and wont come after you with the intent to sting you. they are like sharks, they generally will not mess with you unless you mess with them. By the way they are not a game species and since they are invasive, there are no limits on how many you can take.

I know a guy that got stung by one and he said it was barely equivalent to a bee sting. He just soaked it in warm water. But that is just him I am sure different people could totally different reactions to it.

My scuba store's dive group has a pic of a butterflyfish in the Chesapeake Bay. I told them they probably released it to get the picture. heh
