lion looks bloated

Hello, I fed my new 4in. lion 2 ghost shrimps last night and one this morning. I came home tonight and he would not eat a silverside (that was shortened because the lion is still small). I put it on a wiggle stick.
I did notice that his stomach looked bloated, could this be from the feeding this morning?
I know not to feed more than 3x a week, I'm just testing foods out to try and wean him to frozen and/or prepared foods. Any input is appreciated, Thanks.

What else is in the tank?
Did you have any crabs?
Bloated or a small bulge in the stomach area?
Don't feed for a day or so to see if the lion looks interested......

yeah freeze dried krill is good .. but it may take some work to try to feed them that .. right now I'm working on weening mine off ghost shrimp to freeze dried krill .. in the beginning I tried feeding him that and he looked at it for a long while .. but never touched it

Though you can feed freeze dried krill they need a variety of foods soaked in vitamins. Try to alternate your foods when feeding, it is very important to feed a variety of foods or it will just be a matter of time before the lion becomes ill or worse dies.......
An example of what I feed my lions, Many of my foods come from the grocery store:
Raw Shrimp
Crab
Mahi, Mahi
Shark Steaks
Cray Fish
Ocean Perch
Squid
Octo
Flounder
Red Snapper
Frozen Silversides
Frozen Sand Eels
Scallops
Talapia
dogman - any idea about your lion? Is it still alive?

Just my opinion; you might be over feeding him. I feed my lion 1 silverside wait 2 days or so and feed 1 freeze dried krill etc. More fish are killed by over feeding so i would slow down and observe him and see what happens. Good luck.

Had him since Sun. and didn't eat till I gave him 2 ghost shrimps on Weds. then thurs. morning I gave him one more ghost and that afternoon he wouldn't eat a silverside. I then noticed that his stomach was bulging. Could the bulging be from the ghost shimp from the morning feeding? Remember his stomach was "bloated" 9 hrs. later.
BTW he does look better now, and sorry I'm unable to send pics.
FYI, I did read that they should eat 3x a week and only feed until the stomach looks full, and if my memory serves me the grocery store meats are good but freshwater feeders should not be fed longer than one month, and I think freeze dried foods are not good for lions but I will look it up tommorrow , the article is at work.
Just found the article in my favorites try http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/20...mages/Fig4.htm. Thanks to all.

After issues on the link above try /2002-11/fm/feature/index.php
Hopefully that will work, as you can see I'm not really computer savy.
Again fyi the lion is with a sailfin tang in the quar. tank with nothing in it.(no decor).

Glad to hear it looks a little better, my concern would be internal parasites with this fish and the bloating......
Keep us updated.

Thank You V. All seems well. I'm trying to get him to eat silversides on a wiggle stick, but tonight was a no go, he is selective with his food. Any ideas to wean him onto prepared foods rather than live would be appreciated. Thanks again

Try and try again, volitans are pretty easy to wean, stick with the silversides or try frozen krill thawed .........

Let him go several days with no food (5-6) and then thaw a silverside with tank water, vitamins and some garlic extract. Wait till he comes near the surface and drop in the silverside. As soon as mine hits the water, my fuzzy dwarf lunges.

Thanks to all, My silversides are about 2.5in. long and my lion is only 3.5in (body only).
I have cut the tail off the silverside to shorten it, and put in vit. and garlic.
Any changes or thoughts on what I've done are welcomed.

Cut it if you need to, a Volitan can eat up to half it's body size but I find mine prefer smaller pieces. Cut the silverside in half and try it. Feed until you see a slight bulge in the stomach area........

You can mix silversides and frozen krill with garlic to increase his desire for it also I would only feed once every 2 days thats all I feed my lion and he has grown alot

i dont know why anyone would tell you dont feed a small fish more than 3 times per week these are babies if you can get them to eat small amounts daily vs larger amounts a few times a week they will grow healther.babies need nutrients to grow up healthy as they grow larger you can eventually cut it down to a few times per week .as lioness stated the foods above rotate what you feed daily this giving them a variety in which they need.I also soak all foods in selcon and garlic extreme
