lion looks bloated

wow .. unleashed .. I don't mean to flame you or anything but you must not have done too much research on Lions .. I think everyone else on this pole has a lion, but if you do, it won't last long with you feeding it that much ... Lionfish definetly can't take feeding them everyday .. I mean .. they would eat it .. but they'd die soon .. the only reason they'd eat it is because they're oppurtunistic feeders .. which means if there's food in the water .. they'll eat it no matter how full they are .. but occasionally you will get a lion that will stop eating when it's full and you should be thankful .. that eliminates the possibility of overfeeding it .. but no .. don't feed your lion everyday .. stick to 3x a week .. that's how much I feed mine .. and I feed him 2-3 Live Ghost shrimp or Freeze dried krill depending on what he's in the mood for .. any more questions just ask

Actually unleashed does have lion experience ......... and I have to say when my lions are young I feed a small chunk daily, only when they start to mature do I change the feeding over to every 2-3 days.
I actually feed daily until they hit around five inches, which they are still young at five inches just fast growers, I do this with my dwarfs also. Though it is a small chunk, not until I see the slight bulge, I also inject my lions foods with Vitamins, Cyclopeze & beta Glucan daily to help boost their immune system.
At times I do recommend the same daily feeding schedule.....

I should add......
I would also feed this daily if I was dealing with a sick or injured Lion, except there would be antibiotics injected in the food along with everything else.......

Well he hasn't eaten since last Thurs. He won't eat the fozen krill or silversides. Should I break down and get him a couple of ghost shrimps (he ate these ghost shrimps last weds. night and Thurs, morning)? Thanks for all input.

You could try the ghost shrimp, just feed the ghost shrimp something nutritional first, see if this lion will hunt them.
Does it act interested in the food?
Does it look like it wants to eat but can't or just ignores the food?

Today was the first day the lion even showed the slightest interest in the silverside, otherwise absolutely no interest.

Still not eating silversides or frozen krill with or without a feeding stick. It's been about 8 days since he ate. What to do.

Try Feeding Ghost shrimp but feed the ghost shrimp something nutritional first, you can try feeding damsels or I would even go guppies or mollies with this lion. One feeding of these will not kill your lion, my concern is internal parasites........
I would like to see if it can eat, if the lion tries to eat but is unable to eat than look closely at the jaw. If this lion has no interest in live or eats and bloats again than it may be time to medicate. If this lion eats and all is good than it is just stubborn......lol
Tough to say at this point, but we need to narrow it down........

I'm thinking the bloating was because the lion had three ghost shrimps in 12 hrs. His stomach went down after 24 hrs. Any thoughts? Thank You.

Mine have never bloated eating 3 ghost shrimp and they have eaten three in a matter of minutes.
You need to try live or try a small frozen chunk thawed, try to offer smaller chunks of food, your lion will more likely go after a smaller chunk over large. Place the smaller chunk on your feeder stick and see if you can touch it to the front of the lions mouth, see if it snaps. Just barley touch the food to the end of it's mouth...........
I took in a lion with completely cloudy eyes (they were white) and used this method to feed ...........

I feed my lion three ghost shrimp, wait 1 day, feed him another 3, then wait 2 days .. and so on .. and his stomach does get a little plump right when he's done eating .. but that just means he's full .. it doesn't stay that way for 24 hours though

Jamie, I am going to have to agree with unleashed on this thread. When my fuzzy dwarf was a baby, she would come to the top of the water every day to eat. I would feed her a small amount every day and she seemed very content with that. When fish are small, you have to provide them with a lot of nutrition so that they can grow and remain healthy.
Now, 2.5 years later, my fuzzy dwarf is almost fully grown, and eats 3-4 times per week. She will eat about 10 pieces of whatever I happen to be feeding that day (as I still hand feed her).
Dogman, if your lion is not eating frozen food, there is no need to worry. I would definitely get some ghost shrimp and feed him gut-loaded ghost shrimp until he does accept frozen.

Still not eating frozen. It's been 2 wks. I figured if I gave in with ghost shrimps the not eating cycle might start all over again. I've heard the lions may take a month to wean over. Any additional thoughts welcomed. Thanks to all.

Volitans are unlike dwarfs, volitans are usually pretty easy to wean, I would not take this lion a month........

Are you saying I shouldn't wait up to a month (before feeding live), or this lion will eat way before a month? Thanks.

I would not wait a month to feed live, if this was my lion I would feed live now and than try frozen again.

I would feed 3 or 4 ghost shrimp, but make sure you feed something nutritional to the ghost shrimp before feeding them to your lion...... Watch the lion, you want to make sure it eats.
