one place i found at the moment is $11 australian a kilo (2.2 pounds) but before that the only place i knew of was $18 a kilo and it is very plain lr. not a great deal if saltwater fish shops around here and they are about 2 hours away.

Not that the rock sucks in Atlanta, its just that you have to go to the right places at the right time. Join the Atlanta Reef Club, and you wont have a problem with anything "sucking" again...

in your case i wouldn't call it LR, i'd call it a coral pack... lol! and $12.99 a lb for that is not a bad deal at all... now if it were just normal LR with no corals or anything on it, i'd say you were out of your mind! I paid $1.99 for mine... uncured of cours, but who cares?

For $12.99 a lb it'd have to have more the just corraline on it. I paid $4.00 a lb at a local shop and it was pretty good.

locally its $5.99 fully cured at one store wether its covered in coralline or not, wether its regular fiji or tonga branch rock (whatever's in the cured tank) or $4.99/lb if you order a uncured box of fiji rock drop shipped (I passed on the dollar/lb savings). the only other local store I checked sells it for $9.99 fully cured, not a spec of coralline coverage or anything attractive in shape.
I do plan on looking into cultured florida rock next time around. One local store has dominican republic liverock but I've never priced or looked at it (and I dont think its cultured like florida rock).

Gulf-view has the rock I posted above on sale for $159 for 30# including overnight to your door shipping. I like theirs because Gulf water temps are closer to reef temps. The fact that G.A.R.F. recomends them is a good sign too. I can't justify destroying a reef to decorate my home.

We're not to put links to sites the sell what this site sells, but they don't sell cultured rock here. Google {edit links}, both of which are in Florida.
While you're at it, sign this petition Stop Reef Destruction
Here's a quote from the petition page
"collected live rock cannot be replenished on a biological time scale, as can all other fishery resources. At best geologically renewable over very long periods of time, live rock is a resource that should be preserved from all harvest because its replenishment is not manageable or possible under standard fisheries management.
Coral and live rock formations provide essential habitat to countless marine creatures. Taking coral and live rock reduces the quality and quantity of habitat available to reef organisms. Continued collection seriously disrupts -- and even destroys -- entire reef microcommunities.
Coral and live rock are often collected with hammer and chisel. The physical integrity and ecological balance of sensitive coral reefs and hardbottoms is being disrupted more and more each time another chunk is torn away."
Hopefully this site will become more responsible to those reefs we all claim to love and stop selling Fiji strip mined LR, or at the very least give us reefers that care a environmentally friendly choice.

I bought most of my LR from the big auction site. I live in North GA and I always go to Chattanooga, TN to get my fish supplies. The LR in Chatt town is very nice where I go, with the exception of it being $13 a lb. But, I purchased some with a lot of sponge and Favia growing on it. Also they usually have some nice cactus algea, and they are overflowing with hitchickers (not matis, or bristle worms).

several years ago they dumped a sh*t load of man made aragonite base rock in a designated area off the coast of florida spefically to be harvested for the ornamental aquarium trade as opposed to depleting natural liverock. I dont know how many companies did it but one of the major ones had a video on their website from the huge barge ships and cranes used to dump this sh*t load of rock into the atlantic ( the video was no less dramatic then knocking down a building). tons and tons of rock. then they show its progression over the years and how quickly the lifeforms adapted and adopted the rock. this effort was far from cheap. Seems like a responsible way yo go. Its not that hard to find as long as your searching florida live rock suppliers. me being on the east coast makes it all more sensible for me.

Hey folks, please avoid discussing other stores asking for links, posting a "write me for links," etc. It is easy enough to google aquacultured florida live rock ;) as it is to google an actual store. I don't want to delete this thread because I think a discussion og aquacultured LR has merit, but please keep it a bit more general.
