I just got my live rock delivered. Should I rinse it in fresh water first or just throw right in the tank?

Don't rinse it in freshwater, that will kill a ton of beneficial bacteria and life on the rocks... stuff that you paid for. Throw it right into the saltwater in your tank. And while your at it, add in a small piece of a tail of shrimp as well to get the cycle going.

Too many assumptions I guess. Is it new, is it old, have you established it? I
assume if someone just gets live rock and asks this sort of question that they are new to saltwater and have not done the research yet to know not to put new live rock in an already established tank.

Thanks! It is a new setup, 29g BC HQI. My plan is to have a few small fish and eventually a few easy corals. I thought I may need to rinse it off mainly because there was a bunch of styrofoam all over it.
I ordered 45lbs of LR, is this too much for a 29g? Also, there are a couple of really big pieces. Is it ok to break this up somehow?

You can break it if you want....also if you rinse it, rinse it with sw from the tank in a bucket...then throw out that water and replace the tank water with new sw
Since it is a new tank, you can put it in now (you have any sand?) and then you can do your initial cycle all at once....do you have your own test kits???

I am surprised that you did not qualify that answer with saying if its fully cured and you are not worried about hitchhikers there is nothing wrong with adding it to your established tank

WELL, when he said "just got it delivered" made me think that it was ordered....therefore, fully cured or not (before shipping) after you get it there will probably be some die-off. Personally I would not add that to an established tank. I would have put it in a tote with SW, powerhead and heater for at least 24 hours.....(as I have done before)
ALSO, when I started my 29G, even though it was a NEW set-up, I still placed my Live Rock in a tote of sw cause I didn't want all the die-off floating around

Styrofoam floats.. skim it off the top when it goes in.
Don't rinse them.. just add them.
45lbs sounds about right.. take a pic after you put it in and it'll be easier for us to see what you're working with.
Break it up all you want. Won't hurt a thing.
