I was wondering if anyone knows anything about using real sand from the ocean as live sand in an aquarium?
Part of me says this is a good idea then another part says I'm crazy.

Awesome.... I'm going to replace my arag alive with some real live sand then, and it won't cost me a penny.

why wont it cost u a penny
if its cause your gonna collect it from the beach (not a good idea)
but if you can get it free from some other way thats good

lol
thats what i thought the stuff on the beach and near the shore is the worst sand you can get its full of pollution, waste and tons of other bad crap
think of the beach as the oceans protein skimmer its where all the stuff ends up
plus humans dont help out wih all the stuff we dump in the ocean
in order to get cleanest possible sand you need to go way offshore like ten miles or so then you'll be ok

Doh...
Yeah ten miles isn't happening. It all makes sense now. I was thinking about all the pollution and stuff seemed like it might not be the best, but yeah ten miles out would definitely make for some good sand with a little bit of diving.
Now I have to decide what to do about sand for my tank...
My whole purpose of replacing the sand in the first place was to get red of those amphipods I mistook for mantis shrimp, but I don't really like the way the arag alive looks. It's too coarse for my taste.

well since your in florida i cant reccomend southdown
its nowhere to be found down here
believe ive spent a whole weekend looking
maybe get some caribsea it good just kinda expensive its at the lfs its like a dollar a pound
also you can find some good aragonite based sands on the internet but ususally the money you save by buying it online you pay for it in shipping costs

jason, i used the arag alive baggged sand and its perfect. the tank cycled in a day and it looks great. my dragon goby sifts it all day and keeps it nice and white. little more expensive that way but everything in this hobby is. i put 2 bags in my 75, just the right amount. paid $55 for both locally on sale. if i had to do it again i would. good luck.
