Okay-I want a salt water tank and have for years. I am getting a smallish tank for the living room and really want to dabble in salt water mostly because I have always wanted a clownfish (yes like Nemo but way before the Nemo craze) so here are a few questions
1. Can I put a clownfish in a 12 gallon tank?
2. Do they have to have anemones?
3. ARe they fairly sturdy or do they require a lot of time and attention?
4. Is this a crazy idea in general and should I stick to fresh water and not pursue this?
please be kind as I know little about salt water tanks and am beginning the research process. I know nothing and this looked like a better place to learn than just buying a book. Thanks!

You can keep it in that size tank, it doesn't need an amemone, and they should be fed as far as hardiness, as well as keeping good water quality, you should try salt water, it is facinating but you should do a lot of research, i'm fairly new, and still researching as we speak

Thanks. I like to try a completely new hobby about every two years and knitting is getting dull. I don't have the space or cash for anything huge but I would love to have a go at a nice little tank with a clownfish or two.

1 - The Percula is the best choice for a 12 gallon system in my opinion. They stay small and actually prefer a space limited environment.
2 - Clownfish do not require an Anemone. They will do just as well without one and it's a good idea not to attempt an Anemone in a 12 gallon system.
3 - Percula are a bit delicate before they become accustomed to a new home. Once they adopt an area of their new tank they are one of the most hardy fish.
4 - It's not crazy but in my experience smaller tank are a little bit more difficult than the larger systems. I still recommend a good book to fill in the gaps in your knowledge, especially terminology.

-Tank bred percula clowns are hardier than wild caught so I would look at going tank bred direction.
-A 12 gallon tank is going to be fairly tempermental for a beginner. I have a 20 gallon display with a 10 gallon sump and it is even a little touch at times.
-"Clownfishes" by Joyce D. Wilkerson (book) should answer most of your questions
You should also know, THIS "HOBBY" MORE CLOSELY RESEMBLES AN ADDICTION!!!!

Clownfish only spawn when they are well fed, healthy, and stress free.
A. percula seem to breed better in a 20 vs a larger tank even when all other conditions are similar. My guess is that they feel safer in the smaller tank.
