lower water temperature

Can anyone tell me how I might lower my water temp. in my 125 gallon saltwater tank without buying a chiller? My water temp. is consistently at 82 degrees and the temperature in my house is no higher than 78 degrees. I only have two water pumps and a sterilizer on my tank. Help!

some would suggest putting a fan or two blowing across the top of the tank.
what kind of lights are you running? i know pumps can cause heat but not srue as to how much heat they should put off into the water

I currently have a T5 lighting system with lunar lights, but rarely turn on because of the water temp. Whenever i do turn on, I only use the actinic lights.
Has anyone had success with a fan blowing across the sump?

I keep a fan in the cabinet with the sump....and I also keep a small fan on top of tank...I have a 225g with Metal halides...the fans helped.

I bought a little 4" fan from Walmart for $7...I sit it in the back of tank on the corner...
If you need to you could get 2...1 for each corner...

I keep a fan up top, blowing over the surface of the main tank, and I keep a fan down below, blowing the general area of the sump and equipment. Yes, this does help keep temps down a degree or two. But I have a large tank with lots of lights and equipment, so I eventually got a chiller for piece of mind...
I still run the fans though.

Good idea. I have learned that any "air moving" device works. I have used regular house fans, fans out of an old computer, etc... Be creative.

I will have the same problem in about 2 weeks when the summer heat hits. My problem...a chiller will not work. The aquarium room is a room 6 feet by 13 feet... about 80 square feet. If I had a chiller it would just make the room hot and continue the cycle.

My solution is to purchase a portable AC unit. I know they only work half as good as a normal unit and cost twice as much to boot! With no windows I have little options until the house gets central air in about 2 years.
My hope is to keep the Aquarium room nice an cool...around 70 -72 degrees F. The room on the other side where the DTs are viewed will get blazing hot I think this summer....so hopefully the cool air in the tiny space will balance out with the high heat on the other side of the wall.

good luck

Just wanted to post that I went out over the weekend and bought an inexpensive fan ($10.00) I found at Big Lots. The fan happened to have a clip on it that I could clip onto my acrylic sump directly over the returning water. As a result, I have reduced the temperature of the water by almost five degrees. I thought this might be helpful to those that might have the same problem.
Thanks to everyone that helped me with this problem!!!

I have a 400 watt Metal Halide on my 65 gallon and my temp use to go up to 84-85 degrees. Then I went to my lfs and bought a couple of the coralife 4 inch canopy fans and now my temp went down to between 78-80 degrees so those little fans help alot

My nano reef runs at 85-87 during summer. As long as the water is at a stable temp the fish should be ok to a certain extent. What you don't want to see is it to go from 78 to 85 in a few hours.
