are lunar lights good in a reef tank

Absolutely! It allows you to keep an eye on corals at night to see if any bugs or worms are eating on them. It prevents your fish from being spooked by crawling night critters, and it prevents fin nipping/ fights at night.
plus it allows you to view your tank at night, some things/critters you will never see in the daylight...your tank is alive 24/7 and the blue looks really cool...my red coraline algae has a glow in the dark orange on new growth, which is not seen under daytime lights.

can i add them if i dont have a canopy?(29 gallon tank)

I use a strip line of moonlights, they stand alone in front of my MH lights. They also have individual ones with a suction cup and you can point it wherever you want the light.
Just google moonlights...happy hunting!

I reccomend the blue...

It's such a slight hint of blue(ish) light, that it really does look like the moon is casting a shadow thru the tank.
Personally, if I were a fish
, red or white lights on all night would just tick me off.
