Macro Algae is simply large celled algae. That separates it from hair algae and phytoplankton. Gracilaria is just one type of macro algae.
While it will consume Nitrate, Ammonia, and Phosphates, it is not without problems. It can be very useful for nutrient export and as a natural fish food for grazers.

It can be quite attractive if done right. Most Macroalgae will grow very fast so you need to be prepared to trim it often or it can take over. If you have corals you definately need to steer it clear of the coral because it can quickly kill it.

Here's a picture of a 10 gallon tank I built for a competition many years ago. The algae on the left is Halimeda, lower center is Ochtodes, and in the upper right is Caulerpa racemosa.

That is a beautiful crop of Ochtodes Guy!!
Agreed...that's one macro I could never get the hang of, altho it may have been out-competed by the other macros in the tank.
Jay,
If you run a FOWLR, I'd say do it for sure. If you run a reef, you might want to consider something slow-growing, or add some to your sump/fuge (Chaetomorpha works well for this).
