Was thinking about heading to Roatan, but have always been a little skeptical because I come across these threads on other message boards that say to stay away cause it can get pretty dangerous? What were your opinions of the island and especially the safety?
I havent been there, but generally, places (especially islands) that derive most of their income from tourism tend to be fairly safe. Its in the interest of the local government to keep it that way.

Dont know about Cabo, but I would pick Cozumel over Cancun anyday. Cleaner, safer and you wont have as many obnoxious spring break kids there.
Its been about 10 years, but I stayed here in Cozumel and had a great time

They have their own dive shop onsite, if that is something you are looking to do, and run multiple trips per day with their boats and guides. Again, it was 10 years ago so I'm sure the prices have gone up, but my and my buddy did a 7 day trip and I think it was about $1200 for the resort, including all food, drinks (they had a few bars as well as stations all over where you could walk up, grab a pint glass and pour yourself a tap beer) and 2 dives a day.

I did Cozumel last summer and it was a lot of fun. The island is not as modern and new as Cancun, but I kind of liked the appeal of the more traditional Mexico. Most of the island is pretty deserted, except for the resorts and the little downtown area where the cruise ships come in.
We stayed at a Occidental resort as well, although I think it was the Occidental Grand, as opposed to the Allegro. The diving was AMAZING, and I really liked the guy who took us out. This is his facebook page. He works out of the Occidental.

and this is their dive company

I would highly recommend both of them!

I've been to both Cozumel and Cancun numerous times. As stated, most of the hotels in Cozumel are dated. The reefs are better offshore. but the one's I found right off the beach were about the same as the one's in Cancun. Depending on when you go in February, you're not likely to come across the Spring Break groups. They usually hit those areas in mid-March through April. I've been down there during that time, but I stay in Playa Del Carmen, or further down near Tulum. The beaches and reefs are much nicer in those areas. Downside is it's about a 45 minute to an hour bus ride from the airport. But you also have Xcaret and Xel-Ha water and Eco parks to visit in that area. The best resort I found there is the Barcelo Tropical or Colonial Resort. It's actually a chain of 5 hotels, with Beach and Caribe being the cheapest, and The Palace the high-end resort. It's All Inclusive ( all alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, buffets, al-la-carte dinner, etc.) They have 6 or 7 specoalized restaurants (Steak, Seafood, Italian, Japanese, etc.) that are 4 - 5 star quality. Food some of the best I've ever had in an all-inclusive resort. The beds are as comfortable as you get at a Westin (most Cancun and Cozumel beds are like sleeping on the floor they're so hard). They also have an on-site dive shop where you can get certified, snorkel tours, catamarans, and three huge pools. When we go, we don't even pull out a credit card. Everything's covered unless you want to do excursions.

Krista, Jack - Yea, I was very fortunate a friend told me that his friend died while doing his first few dives in Thailand due to similar incident and he was just panicking and consuming too much water.. Keep in mind, whether in US or in any other country, you can't panic and try to keep level head to sort this out.

Last time I was in Cancun, the resort I stayed in was offering this Sea Trek Helmet Diving. Looks like more of the Caribbean resorts are offering this alternative to Snuba:

That looks awesome! I will look for that when I go to Cayman Islands again next year. Maybe this year with Jeff here.

+1. It is relatively safe but accidents can happen to anyone so be prepared and no matter what, do not panic like I did.

Barcelo has wi-fi throughout the complex. I was using it myself. The deal is if you don't get a specific vacation package, you have to pay $10/day for the service. Go to http://www.funjet.com. They have some pretty good prices and special packages for all types of Caribbean resorts. I was looking at Barcelo this summer, and they had a special where you received a $250 resort credit which you could use for excursions, massages, or other resort amenities. You also got priority bookings for all the specialized restaurants, and a "internet coupon" for each day you stayed there that covered the $10 cost. The last three times I used them, the package also included a free charter bus shuttle to/from the resort you were staying in. If you took a cab from the airport to Barcelo, it'd probably be close to $80 one way. I personally just rent a car while I'm there, but that's not for everyone.

Want to try someplace different, look up Bavaro Majestic Colonial Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. Haven't been there. but I hear they have some of the nicest reefs in the Caribbean. The hotel itself looks amazing, and based on the reviews, the food is just as good.
Go here and look at the Photo Gallery:

I havent been to the DR, but I have heard from a number of people that you can not leave the resorts without fear of getting robbed, assaulted or even killed there. NO THANKS!

Yeah...there are a lot of places that look beautiful.....but scare me LOL
My wife and I went to St Lucia on our honeymoon and we spent quite a bit of time off the resorts and never once felt any sense of danger. One of the friday nights there we took a cab to one of the local towns for their weekly street party and had an absolutely amazing time. Local people, great music and the freshest, cheapest seafood I've ever had. I would highly recommend that island to anyone. Absolutely gorgeous there!

Haven't heard that. I've had work associates go there, and they never stated they had any issues taking excursions off resort property. By the looks of the beach and the waves right off shore, you probably have direct access to enough reefs off the beach you wouldn't need to take excursions. I do believe they have some bay that you swim with whale sharks that's in that area.
I 've actually heard that Jamaica isn't ther safest place to go.

I'd love to go to the Virgin Islands, but it's cost prohibitive due to the airfares and the time it takes to get to one of the islands. I looked at St. Lucia, St. Maarteen, and St. Kitts this summer, and the cheapest round-trip flight from San Antonio I could find was around $950/ticket, and it took almost 14 hours to get there after the connections and island hops.
